I've been looking over last night's election results & this state is doomed. Doesn't even seem to be an argument at this point. I do find it funny that the state Dems couldn't have picked two more polar opposites for the big gigs. Shaggy for President & Thurston Howell the III for governor.

and we picked a billionaire and multi-millionaire for governor, who both have basically no plan to fix the state other than to bring back coal.

I get politicians promise jobs but Trump & Justice are just straight up lying to West Virginians. However, I don't know what's worse - politicians who just straight up lie to them or the politicians who have supported legislation that contributed to the loss of their livelihood. I'm all for providing job training but what non-coal industries are going to come in & replace coal?

Coal could actually come back somewhat. There are ways to do it.

I am so tired of politicians and politics. No difference in Dems and Repubs. Give Jim Justice a chance he has proved he can succeed in business.

The Fed Govt has gladly killed off the coal industry. Could it come back? Absolutely. The EPA (along with the anti-capitalists) have other ideas though. Democrat economic "success"......more people on food stamps and benefit checks.

we might see small spikes here and there, but coal isn't coming back. the world is changing, the world is moving on from fossil fuels, natural gas is cheaper, etc.

yeah, it's sad in a lot of ways.

The world will go with whatever is cheaper and cost effective. The govt manipulated the market in terms of coal.

that being said, wait until they go after gas for some reason. Oh wait...fracking...Oh wait...can't put that pipeline there. Oh wait....

If Jim Justice is really a Democrat, then I am the King of Spain.

Someone needs to be honest. The truth is much of WV will never be economically successful in the terms most people think in. Hundreds of thousands of people need to move to where jobs are located.

Yep, I honestly don't know why some young people stay.

Natural gas is a fossil fuel . . .

and the world is moving on from it, along with coal, slowly. wind, solar, etc are all gaining momentum, more so than anytime in history when coal slumped. the difference was when coal slumped before natural gas wasn't cheaper/reliable, but now it is a reliable alternative for our energy needs.

The global oil and natural gas glut will be here for decades to come. Coupled with rapid developments in renewable energy technology, coal is not coming back. Any short term uptick in domestic demand for coal will be satisfied by much more inexpensive to operate Wyoming (and to a lesser extent Illinois) coal companies. There are some coal miners from Appalachia who may be making the correct choice by moving to those locales if they insist on making a living in the industry for a little while longer.

The U.S. consumer does not want to see the price of oil and natural gas double/triple/etc. to make Appalachian coal economically viable again.

Why would anyone chose an industry for a career that has shed about 90% of the number of its employees over the last century?

Wind and solar are very poor options for electric generation on a mass scale. For supplemental electric production it fits well.
