We have been solid on defense for the past 8 years, Now we are just like 2012 all over again. Better score 50 tonight if we want to win

I heard they are still on the bus travelling to the game, they got stuck in traffic.

There are a myriad of issues on defense...

1. Our secondary play outside of Gilmore is really bad. Any team with a capable QB is going to hang points on us.

2. Our linebackers are not good tacklers, which allows RBs to get extra yards every time they get to the second level.

3. We retained the wrong coordinator. Lambert was very good, Guidry has not been thus far.

4. You can't expect to have a college defense on the field for 100 plays in a game. We either score in under a minute or go 3 and out in under a minute.

Add all that together and you get what we have seen the last two weeks. A defense that doesn't tackle, gives up big plays on the passing game, and gets gassed in the 4th quarter.

Spot on. The more I thought about it, it does look like they are getting worn out. That’s the downside to the tempo we run on offense.

If we are going to play this style of game, that's fine, but we have to be 2-deep on defense... You need to have two guys at all 11 spots that can play and rotate. I hope we are recruiting corners, safeties and outside linebackers hard.

Huff was asked last night about how the KO return put the D back on the field and if that had any impact on them.
He indicated the conditioning was good and he didn't notice they were gassed.

Back end skill level continues to be an issue.

2 deep at every position is a luxury only the top 4-5 programs have. Rarely are teams going to be "2 deep" in the defensive secondary.

Hell, some the issues we had on dfense last night was our attempt to rotate and switch up defenders (dline and linebackers). Appys offensive tempo was preventing the switch totally or catching us unprepared at the snap because of player rotation.

Agree. Amazed me we didn't use any of our timeouts on those critical plays right before the half, but call a timeout in the third quarter to decide whether we were going to kick a FG or not.

I would argue that there can't possibly be that much drop off between our starting secondary and our backups (with Gilmore as the exception) after what we have watched the last two weeks.

Not being able to substitute is part of teams playing tempo, which is smart. If we were better coached we would be better prepared for that. Our offense plays fast, and App didn't appear to have issues substituting or getting lined up, because they understand to only sub on plays when the offense subs and the ref hold the snap.

I'm with Rhino. Keeping fresh legs on defense would have paid off in the 4th quarter. Granted, ASU's fast tempo makes it harder to substitute, but it can be managed. We may not have a 2-deep quality defense, but we do have some quality players who are not starting. Hoping the starters can last 4 quarters is not smart.

Agree to disagree on this.

Is it really? One minute I'm reading our fans suggest our offense running up tempo is bad.....but now an opponent running an up tempo offense is good?

Bottomline, Defense has to make plays. They didn't.

We've been rotating dline and Lbackers in and out all season. It may be the first season in a while we've have 8 dline to rotate.

Exactly
MU had App how many times on 3rd and long and they converted? It became almost automatic they'd either get a 1st down or we'd get a PI call it seemed.

I thought the one play that showed me how far our d has fallen this year was giving up a first down with a 17 yard run on a 3rd and 15. Never should have happened
Agreed... Can't fault the line for rushing the passer in that situation given the down and distance, we have to have a linebacker/safety come up and make that play.

OTOH we don’t have to have a DE rush inside to lose contain, nor have a DB run backwards before making the tackle instead of attacking

DBs clearly a problem as witnessed by 2 ASU receivers having 9 and 10 receptions and both over 100 yards in receiving. Not the only problem defensively, however. No D containment on the perimeter and their "second" running back, I believe, gashed our D for 187 yards on 20 carries. That's over NINE yards per carry, folks! Our linebacking play was atrocious, IMO. Couldn't locate and close on opposing ball carriers quickly, looked slow, and whole D, line, LBs, etc., did a lot of (poor) arm tackling.

We will see how good our coaching is. How do you scheme to cover up for a secondary that cannot cover?

Lambert was only an option as head coach. He had the DC job offer at Purdue already so he was going to be HC or gone.

I actually think when we go man to man coverage we have a better shot at making plays. Some of their issue is technique while defending (turning their head) m2m. The safety has to get better at coming over the top and helping too. He was late at getting over during a couple of the longer thrown balls.
Our zone is atrocious. 5-8 yds off the line of scrimmage is a cushion we can’t seem to close on when the ball is in the air. Disguising coverages is something we may also need to do better pre-snap.
I think we’ll get better. Appy had a solid QB and some good possession receivers.
