WV Within Logo?

Just curious everyones opinon. Having the state outline in the logo? I think it would add extra income on merchandise sales. My favorite logo of all time is the Marco and WV in the background by far.

Too busy IMO. We have our brand - the "M" and we are known by that. I cannot see how adding an outline map of the state would increase sales of Marshall merchandise. However, there would only be one way to know for sure.

No pork chop but I have been saying all along that including the state outline with our logo is another way to identify ourself with this state. WV people are proud of their state and showing the state outline allows people to show that pride. Gives us a state identity where a lot of people still don't know where Marshall is located outside of this state. Why else would those shirts that have the state outline and say "home" in the middle be so popular?

I don't get why it hasn't been done much sooner but we have never been known for being able to market well or take advantage of the movie.

There is a bit of risk here...

Having a single but notable logo like the 'M' we have and 'The Herd' script could become a more universally known brand than just a WV state outline.
Look at Bama's logo, its a giant 'A' with no state outline...yet, youd know it if you saw it.
The same goes with other places...the blue 'D' with Duke, that dumb looking 'o' at ohio state, the Maise and Blue 'M' at Michigan.

Basically, would we want to appeal more nationally with our brand as it is, or appeal more to the state? Plus, how many would associate Marshall with a WV state outline to wvu? Marshall could be their own entity in a sense, and at the opposite end, risk distancing themselves from the state because of lack of lable of the state.

IMHO,

The schools we should look to emulate are other major state universities not name for a state, premiere among those Auburn, Purdue, and Clemson. You don't forget you are a state school, but some other school has the name of the state, so you deal with it. Move on.

Yeah, there are people who think Marshall is in Marshall Texas or Marshall Minnesota. There are (really) prople who think that West Virginia is the western part of Virginia, and a lot of people around DC that assume that since they can be in Charles Town in 40 minutes, the rest of the state much be nearby. These people are sub-morons and wouldn't know the outline of WV if they saw it anyway.

The non-alumni "that there is usens, and usens is good" WVU crowd is never going to support Marshall, no matter what we say or do. Those people are sub-morons as well. In a month, when the reality of life as one of the Little 8 sinks in, again, they will all be here, with their uninformed idiocy, again. Who cares about them? I don't.

It does make me wonder if there is a state school who actually doesn't bear the name of the state anywhere in their name, and has more in-state fan support than the flagship school.
I can only think of maybe 2...Notre Dame and Boise State.
Certainly Louisville won't overtake UK in fan support within the state...same with Clemson and South Carolina (although that's VERY close).
Vanderbilt obviously won't beat out Tennessee.

Name and titles do matter I guess...

Well, Notre Dame and Vandy are not "state schools", they are private schools.

Clemson and USC are probably pretty close to tied, and the part of the state where Clemson is, is growing and becoming more prosperous.

Boise State is probably right, although in a couple of years when it all falls apart, it is back to drawing 400. As we know, it is unsustainable.

NOBODY outside Jefferson County cares one whit about Louisville. Kentucky has 119 other counties.

Other than that, I cannot think of one. Which is why, in marketing, Auburn, Clemson, and Purdue have enough fan support to play at the highest level, despite no "easy believe" fans who see the same words as their car tags (NO other relationship) for the other school in the state. These programs are able to draw enough to maintain that over decades. There are lessons there to learn.

I don't really have a problem with it either way, but I definitely think that if we did an alternate helmet, including the state in it would be awesome.
