One was born last year but didn't last but about 24 hours. This one seems to be healthy and as far as we know, it's the first living yak born in WV.
Is there a high death rate?

No. They are a hearty species. They require about 1/4th the pasture that cattle do, and are resistant against many diseases. Normal life span is longer than that of cattle and they produce offspring over a longer period of time.
What purpose do they serve? It can't be meat if they only require 1/4 of cattle feed. Or are they that lean? Very interesting. Thanks.
