As you look at the numbers, here's a chart for reference to see how each grade would be categorized:

1-49 - poor
50-55 - below average
56-64 - average
65-70 - above average
71-79 - good
80-89 - very good
90-99 - outstanding

Defensive Line:

Koby Cumberlander (38 tackles, 4.5 sacks) led Marshall’s defensive line with a composite grade of 72.8 on 385 snaps for the 2021 campaign. Cumberlander was followed by Elijah Alston (31 tackles, 3 sacks) at 72.1 on 459 snaps, while Shane Simmons (30 tackles, 1.5 sacks) played 312 snaps and graded a 71.2. Despite an injury limiting him to only 120 snaps, Jayshaun Coffman (15 tackles, 1 sack) received the fourth best grade with a 70.0. Other defensive line grades of note: Sam Burton 69.0 on 294 snaps, Jamare Edwards – 66.7 on 480 snaps, TJ Johnson – 66.5 on 482 snaps, Owen Porter – 66.2 on 320 snaps, Esaias Carpenter – 64.6 on 209 snaps, TyQaze Leggs – 63.9 on 285 snaps, Rodney Croom – 54.1 on 240 snaps

Linebackers:
Charlie Gray (49 tackles, 2 sacks) had the top grade among the Herd’s linebackers with a 77.3 on 347 snaps. Abraham Beauplan (104 tackles, 2.5 sacks) played 578 snaps and graded at 75.9 and Eli Neal (92 tackles, 5.5 sacks, 1 interception) finished the season with a grade of 72.4 on 736 snaps.

Secondary:
Nazeeh Johnson (60 tackles, 2 interceptions) played a total of 656 snaps and finished the year with a grade of 79.4. Cory McCoy (63 tackles, 2 intercepetions) was next in line with a grade of 72.0 on 841 snaps while Micah Abraham (29 tackles, 1 interception) played 764 snaps and graded at 71.3. Brandon Drayton (60 tackles, .5 sack) received a grade of 66.3 on 484 snaps. Other secondary grade of note: Joshua Bowers – 61.2 on 220 snaps, E.J. Jackson – 58.8 on 475 snaps, LeAnthony Williams – 58.6 on 140 snaps, Steven Gilmore – 57.6 on 838 snaps


Top Defensive Grades Across CUSA for the 2021 Season:

Defensive Line: Alex Wright from UAB with a grade of 90.8 (Koby Cumberlander was 31st among CUSA defensive linemen)

Linebacker: Jordan Young from ODU with a grade of 81.8 (Charlie Gray was 6th among CUSA linebackers, while Abraham Beauplan was 8th and Eli Neal was 13th)

Secondary: Grayson Cash from UAB with a grade of 90.4 (Nazeeh Johnson was 6th among CUSA corners and safeties)
