Alabama state rankings: #44 overall
Crime: #40
Education: #44
Health Care: #44
Environment: #47

Pretty shitty in most of the major things I care about, not to mention horrible natural beauty (other than possibly the gulf shore area), no major cities, and not just a bunch of uneducated but a bunch of uneducated rednecks, which are the worst kind of morons.

Yeah, I can see why they're mad.

I love Alabama. Always enjoyed it there. I have even stayed in Selma and enjoyed it. Tuscaloosa is a fun college town. Birmingham is not bad. Huntsville is in the hills and a tech town. Moutains in the north end of the state. The Gulf in the South. Been to Montgomery, Auburn. Not bad at all.

Keep Alabama for some serious growth over the next few decades. It has some serious potential.

If you are interested in your kid getting an education with other bright kids, move to Huntsville Alabama. I spent a lot of time at Marshall space flight center and Redstone Arsenal from 2005-2007. Fantastic area and some of the brightest minds the MIC can pay for there.

Huntsville also the nicest public tennis facility I've ever been to. Really nice area.

Speaking of shitty. The protests, though you deny it, are being funded by America-haters on the left. Even tracked funds from other countries pouring in. Where are they the worst? Blue states. See Red states to understand how to stop this anarchy and Marxism your tribe has on full display.

Is it going to take something drastic happening to wake up Democrat voters or are they really so tightly wound with their party, they choose party over America? There are no real Democrats leading our country. They've been forced out of the party it is today. Wide open borders with terrorists and illegal foreign nationals pouring in.

This is all so subjective, but I'd gladly live in Huntsville, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, or Auburn.

There are good public state schools there for college. I'd gladly let my kids go to Alabama, UAB, Auburn, or UA-H.

I do agree with rifle about lack of natural beauty....the mountains up north can be good for hiking and rock climbing and gulf shores area are nice beaches, but man there's a big, hot and humid, blah landscape throughout much of the state. Some decent lakes in there but nothing amazing.

I don't know about that health care rating...sure, maybe out in Selma you can't get good care, but UAB is a world class medical center (over $300 million in NIH funding last I checked).

I don't care about "major cities," I'd prefer not to live in or near one. Mid size cities are my preference. When my kids are out of high school I may very well re locate to a rural area.

As it relates to the kids protesting on campus...I have a friend that sits on an SEC school board (?not sure what committee?), and he tells me in the application/admissions sector business is booming. All those northerners/coastals saw how much fun it was unmasked and allowed to be normal-ish and they are flocking to these schools. I have a good friend and his daughter was at UCLA for all of COVID and it was a miserable college experience...though with that said she's working in NYC at a hedge fund, so maybe it was ?worth it?

Having spent every summer growing up in Alabama I can honestly say Birmingham is a shit hole. I enjoyed my time there because I spent it with relatives I didn't get to see very often but I have to agree with rifle on this one. As a whole Alabama sucks.

I don't think you'd get any disagreement with many on this board about Birmingham, or St. Louis, or Memphis, etc. Have you ever been to Huntsville? It's a world apart from Birmingham.

And I do know where St. Louis is...

Then again, Huntsville does have a Republican mayor...

There is more to Alabama than Birmingham...

My son went to school in Alabama. Alabama has very rural areas, extremely rural. It is hot as hell there in the summer. But, I found the people to be really nice and hospitable.

I have been reading some business things and there are people who say to really watch Alabama over the next 20 years in terms of business and manufacturing growth.

Isn't that what Trump has been doing for the last few years??? Wow... You may be on to something...
What? The right LOVES Trump. He has remade the party in his image. Trump's problem is there are more on the left and in the middle than on the right...but this isn't too big a deal with the EC.

These protesters in the video HATE each other. Wanting to destroy the Jews isn't cool. Wanting to destroy the Palestinians isn't cool. You've got two groups of assholes here...if they are both pissed, good. Frankly Alabama should put both sides in an arena, give them medieval weapons, and sell tickets.

Didn't say only thing in Alabama was Birmingham. Nerd alert... I went to space camp and I agree Huntsville is nice. That doesn't change the gist of my argument though. Overall Alabama sucks

I have even stayed in Selma and enjoyed it.
Except for when one of the marchers removed your white hood when you were throwing tomatoes at them.

Birmingham is not bad.
Agreed that it isn't bad. It's awful. You and Bull Connor used to have a good time in Birmingham back in the day, huh?

I've played at Alabama and Auburn. I've coached at Troy. I've spent a dozen nights in Mobile over the past three years. I've been to Montgomery and the gulf shores area. It's an utter shithole, and the people make it worse.

My brother went to Space Camp in Huntsville and enjoyed it. I have two Marshall friends (one a doctor, one an attorney) who live in Huntsville and enjoy it. I've heard decent things but have never been. But if you're struggling trying to find anyplace decent in a state, you can be assured it is a shithole.

I don't know about that health care rating...sure, maybe out in Selma you can't get good care, but UAB is a world class medical center (over $300 million in NIH funding last I checked).
It's a state ranking. One hospital in a state doesn't make or break it. If a large part of the population doesn't have access to quality medical care, can't afford it due to not having certain programs, etc., then it earns the #44 ranking.

Here are the schools that have had at least 45 arrests due to the protests. There sure are a hell of a lot in Texas and those southeast red states.

Don't you just hate facts?

Let me dumb this down for you: If somebody posted a video of Iranians chanting negative things about the U.S., your kind would make comments such as "who cares about them, they are bigoted, kill gays, are horrible on women's rights, and are ragheads."

In other words, discounting those people's issue would be fair game. Likewise, when you have a bunch of people from a shitty area (regardless of Iran or Alabama) protesting, it is extremely fair to discount their opinion.

I went to space camp
1) Grew up poor in the 'hood that had bad schools in the area
2) Went to one of the wealthiest high schools in the state in a very nice area
3) Claims to have been accepted to UNC but can't form a grammatically correct sentence on here
4) Poor yet was able to get $3000 (modern day equivalence) to go to a week of Space Camp
5) Gives children butt-cheek massages but claims he is a "teacher"

Your stories don't match.

Exactly, which is why these state rankings are dumb on the d*ck swinging "where you live sucks" arguments.

You live in a city, not a whole state.

The whole where-you-live stuff is dumb anyway (yes, I know it goes both ways, people making fun of you for CA). People either can't afford to move or they like where they live...either way many times not much to be done about it. Would I chose to live in WV? probably not. But many people like it there. Ones that don't often can't afford to get out.

Where I get butt hurt is people intentionally flocking to new areas only to b*tch about things that are widely known to be part of living there.

I disagree. The rankings are not singling out individual cities. They are doing what they're supposed to be doing: ranking the entire state.

For instance, Charleston (SC) is a decent city, but overall, the state sucks. The state sucking also impacts those people who live in Charleston. It's awful in crime, awful in education, awful in opportunity. Just because you live in a decent city doesn't allow you to escape the overall shittiness of the state.

There are parts of California that I wouldn't want to live in, such as where @johns1124 lives. But the parts that I would want to live are some of the top tier in the country.

The whole where-you-live stuff is dumb anyway (yes, I know it goes both ways, people making fun of you for CA). People either can't afford to move or they like where they live...either way many times not much to be done about it.
In some cases, sure. Many people can't pack up and move to most parts of California or anyplace that isn't cheap, such as Middle Class Murox. He spent years on here discussing how he despises WV and its people and how he was going to be moving soon, but he is still chained to that $350k house. But even with his economic challenges, he could move to nearly as cheap places that are far better: outside of hotspots in Montana, Idaho, Tennessee, North Carolina. He probably can't afford to move to blue states, because those states almost always have better educational systems. Better education leads to better jobs. Better jobs lead to higher income/increased cost of living widespread.

I don't think most people who are on here and live in WV truly like WV. I think they accept it, as it is easier to do than to get another job, go through the trouble of moving, be away from extended family, etc. But there are many far superior places to live for around the same cost that have the qualities people like about WV without all of the shit. It's just not convenient for them to move there, because of one of WV's #1 rankings: laziness.

1.) yep
2.) applied to magnet program and got accepted
3.) just like your out of this world lsat scores
4.) according to what I was able to find space camp was about $650 in 1996/97 when I went. That's about 1200 now. It was a Christmas/birthday present from my parents and grandparents
5.) yep I am teacher

Stories match just fine

They weren't really out-of-this-world. They were very high but not elite. Unlike my income, I remember that they were outside of the top 3%. More important, after being on here for 20+ years, most people don't doubt that I could perform within the top 6%. We would be hard to find anybody who believes your story of being accepted to UNC.

You hitchhiked on tractor-trailers there? No? So there were travel costs associated, right? Yep. All of those poor people being able to come up with $1500 for their son's week at camp.

5.) yep I am teacher
Of what, cavemen, because that is what you sound like. And this is further proof of South Carolina's poor state of education.

rifle, there are lots of racial overtones in your post about Alabama. I found the state to be quite a down home feeling. I also lived for a while on the Alabama/GA border. Visited my son who also lived there and also went to school in Alabama. I like Alabama.

@Jartard

Obviously you are considerably smarter than the person asking for a source who originally used that very argument while trying to make his (typically stupid) point...

Nobody has any idea, like usual, what the hell you're trying to argue.

It's very simple: You asked a question which included an objective claim. I am asking you to provide support for that objective claim.

Let's keep try to keep up. I spent summers in Alabama while growing up in North Carolina. I'm pretty sure the cost to get there wasn't anywhere close to $650 in 96 dollars. Charlotte to Huntsville is about 400 miles. That's about 2 1/2 to 3 gas station stops per trip unless I'm driving an 18 wheeler it's not going to cost over $100/fill up.

Quite a few Neil Youngs here. As for me I prefer Lynrd Skynrd...🙂👍

So lot’s give you the benefit of the doubt and say the total cost, roundtrip, was $100 including food. That puts the 1997 bare minimum cost at $750, which is $1500 today.

I wish I had grown up “poor” like you.

Austin is a Blue city. Key word though.

ARRESTS

Not much of that happening in Blue states.
So you want to argue blue city but then change arrests to exclude red states? Have you ever heard of intellectual dishonesty?

Do yourself a favor while we wait for KYJelly to prove his bogus claim - check out how many arrests were made at UCLA last night.
