They’re Paid Billions to Root Out Child Labor in the U.S. Why Do They Fail? https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/28/us/migrant-child-labor-audits.html?unlocked_article_code=1.JU0.gg-d.zhLLe6tkUXrI&smid=nytcore-android-share
I was kind and gifted this article so everyone can read it.
As I have stated here many times, illegal immigration is not an official policy issue. It's a demand issue. Corporations knowingly hire illegals and use underage illegals for child labor.
An educated guess is we would have to budget at least 10x what we currently do to just border enforcement to put a dent in slowing it down. The border is vast, rugged, and largely isolated. And it is still a fool's errand as long as illegal immigrants know they will find work and be paid much more than back in the shithole countries.
There's a reason even Republicans do nothing to fix this. It's not so they can get you crackers riled up (although this works, it is just a side benefit). It's because their corporate masters want it this way.
As noted in the article, Labor Department budgets have been cut to the point it would take 100 fvcking years to inspect every business once. I wonder who loves to cut agency budgets...
As with most big problems in this country, it is not a failure of bad government choosing bad policy; it is a problem of giant corporations getting what they want. Capitalism is wicked... socialism might not be any better, but illegal child labor is pretty damn low.
