In this week's PFF Grades, we look at the players -- and areas -- that Marshall excelled in following its 28-7 victory over Gardner-Webb en route to moving to 3-2 on the year.
The entire offense's grades, by position group, are below:
The quarterback position continues to be a major work in progress as Henry Colombi posted a new season-low, notching the worst PFF grade of the entire offensive unit at 29.5. Colombi went 13-of-20 for 138 yards and two touchdowns, but his passes went for just 6.9 yards per completion and his QBR was a rough 6.2.
Cam Fancher, in his 14 snaps at the position, went 8-of-13 for 47 yards and had a QBR rating of 11.9. Fancher, however, ran the football five times for 29 yards in the contest, nearly averaging six yards per carry.
The running back room proved to grade out as the best positional unit of the bunch in Week 5, with Khalan Laborn and new primary backup A.J. Turner posting two of the four highest Pro Football Focus grades.
Turner, in his 14 reps at the position, notched a team-high 78 as a grade, notching a 79.5 pass grade, a 69.5 pass blocking grade, and a 70.9 run grade. He ran for 24 yards on five carries.
Laborn, who continues to deliver in a strong manner on a weekly basis, ran for 191 yards and two touchdowns on 35 carries. His overall PFF grade was a 71.2 -- and his pass blocking (78.6) and run (71.6) grades were both very solid.
From a wide receiver standpoint, Marshall had a decent day at the position, with six different wide receivers catching a pass along with Laborn and tight end Devin Miller.
Shadeed Ahmed notched the second highest grade on the entire offense with a 74.9 PFF, but Ahmed played only 19 snaps and had just one catch for seven yards. Caleb McMillan had a 68.7 PFF grade, as well, but he only played two snaps and wasn't targeted.
Of the receivers who played the majority of the game, Corey Gammage, who had six catches for 54 yards and a touchdown, posted a 62.8 grade in 75 snaps while Charles Montgomery, who led the receiver room with five receptions for 72 yards, notched a 62.5 grade. Jayden Harrison added in a 62.7 PFF grade, but only had one catch for five yards.
Talik Keaton (58.5 PFF) and Caleb Coombs (56.4 PFF) combined for just 16 yards on four catches while Stone Scarcelle (54.9 PFF) and EJ Horton (42.2 PFF) rounded out the unit.
Tight-end wise, the room did not grade out well. Rahmod Smith only played a single snap and had a poor grade of 60 PFF on the snap, while Devin Miller and Stacey Marshall, Jr. posted the fifth and third-lowest PFF grades on the offense with 49.4 and 48.1 marks, respectively.
After mixed results throughout the first four weeks of the season, the offensive line posted another mixed effort in Week 5.
Logan Osburn, the only player to play in all 91 snaps for the offense in the contest, posted a good 72.2 PFF grade at center. Osburn also notched the team's highest pass blocking grade at 82.5. Marshall right tackle Kendrick Sartor recovered from a brutal Week 4 against Troy to post a much improved 70.9 PFF grade and the team's second-best pass blocking grade at 81.3. Tariq Montgomery, who played four snaps at left tackle in a reserve role, notched a 66.8 grade.
Cedrice Paillant (59.6 PFF) and Jack Murphy (58.6 PFF) had pass blocking grades of 77.8 and 78.4, respectively, while Ethan Driskell's 57.9 PFF mark, Trent Holler's 52.0 tally and Dalton Tucker's 48.6 showing rounded out the line. From a run blocking standpoint, nobody graded out above 70 and only Montgomery (68.1 in limited snaps), Osburn (66.9), Murphy (65.8) and Sartor (65.4) were above 60 on the offensive line.
