Dantoni's system will likely never use a 6'10"+ center.

He wants all players to be sound in all aspects including ball handling and shooting. He will stick with the 6'8"-6'9" athletic forwards to play underneath

True, but height and athleticism are usually inversely related especially with Marshall's pool of possible recruits.

6'10+ center that can handle the ball and shot never end up at Marshall unless they are very raw, foreign, a JUCO recruit, baggage, or has some sort of Academic issue

Never have and never will are two different things. One never knows, do one?

Based on comments by DD on his show and after game, certainly don't think Kambola will return, and Smith is very doubtful.

On Kambola, "we will miss some of things JP was able to provide next season"

On Smith, "we've had discussions and we will talk more this week and make a decision, as he has a number of different options"

Sounds like Smith may be considering football. I wouldn't mind for him to do both

I like that option haha

AH , forgetting 6 10 Randy Noll from Ky who could light it up from the corner baseline. That was great Herd team.

He has grown since then, plus 6 8 back in the day is easily 6 10 now.

And that was what 50 years ago??

In today's day and age find a good center to come to Marshall with no baggage is the same as finding an elite DL with no baggage to come to Marshall......never ever.

Our best bet is finding someone with some sort of skills and developing it. Tyler Wilkerson is in that mold and even he played out of position

I'd like to see several of those end up WV State,Tech.,Vanhoose ,Curry ,and Charlie Jones were pretty good centers.Don't bring out your tape measure, close enough....

what i was thinking was a tall, long, shot blocker...certainly a big athletic guy who can pass/handle the ball and play pick n roll and movement BB fits my archaic term "center". give me a Whiteside-like guy but with a don't quit attitude, not a pouter when the chips are down (although obviously he's maturing finally and good for him)!

i don't really think the game of BB has changed that much since i was a kid in the 70's (fast break/pick n roll was alive then), however, the day i see a 7 ft point guard who can drain 3s all day, i'll resign my thinking!

really, it's unfortunate that when Kambola is just starting to become a contributor, he's gone and Smith could have been the same.

Coach DD, find a good big or two who can finish at the hoop on D and O! Do that and i think you can indeed say "we're back"

Earl Jones from Mt. Hope was a legit 6' 11" and could hit 50% from the 3 point line (if they had had a 3 point line back then). Most talented player I've ever seen in person. Not sure about the PG aspect tho. :)

Mark,
Did you watch Mt. Hope play Donnie Smith's Vinson Tigers at the Field House? Jones was a NBA lottery pick now I think,he could bring the ball up like a guard.,extraordinary basketball talent.

According to a book I recently read about the Showtime Lakers era, Jones combined his talent with being both dumb and lazy. He coasted against inferior talent in WV and at UDC, and struggled when matched against others with similar talent but stronger work ethic.

Nobody said he was a bad guy, but it was clear very quickly that he did not have what it took to be a productive pro player. Many intimated that the only reason he lasted nearly as long as he did was that Jerry West did not want to admit he made such a big (and rare) mistake with such a high draft pick.

And just to be clear, that is not my own opinion, but a summary of the very brief passages in the book that actually discussed Earl. I'm just the messenger.

I was about 8 years old when I met Earl Jones at the Charleston Civic Center and I asked for his autograph. He told me to "Get outta here"… Now I realize he probably couldn't spell it. Always disliked him after that.

If I am not mistaken, I believe Earl Jones was the last player taken in the first round (going to the afore mentioned Lakers). Not a lottery pic.

Had Aberdeen lived, we would have probably signed Robert Earl Jones. Who knows what Stu could have made of him?

Earl Jones was the best big man I've seen then and now. The guys from UK couldn't carry his jock

i don't intend to dismiss this current yr and i hope the Herd can pull as many upsets in Birmingham as possible (can't wait to watch tonight!).
on topic; best wishes to Edmonds...been a tough row to hoe, but he's gardened productively and with class (even though he was not 100%). if this re-injury, as i understand it, is a possible end to his CBB career, then how will it affect nxt yr? if he doesn't return, it will be tough to lose senior leadership, eliminating, once more, the depth-aspect of this team. what a tumultuous last few yrs for Herd BB. i still see brighter days ahead.

I was at the Vinson - Mt. Hope game. The Tigers battled hard. Wasn't that impressed by Jones to be honest. Height kills in WV HS b'ball - especially in that era.

I had the chance to see him play. I would have to agree on Russell Lee.

Hassan COULD have been the best center we ever had. As for the maturity level when he was here, Russell would have ate him up. Much quicker.

As great as Russell Lee was, I think he'd have difficulty getting anything inside against Whiteside, who would have an approximately 8 inch height advantage.

Lee was cat quick, constantly moving inside and outside, plus a lot more intelligent. Hassan couldn't keep up and Russell would have duped him, drawing about three fake charges a game. If Whiteside would have stayed another two years, I would have agreed that he was the best.

LOL. I don't think you can label a headcase that didn't even start until half way through his freshman season as the "greatest" center in MU history. Heck, goony Bob Allen was more effective over the long haul than Hassan. I'll also never forgive him for quitting at the end of the season (nor Donny for the same reason).

Shoot, Robert Epps was one of the more effective centers we ever had - at 6' 7" or thereabouts, b/c he could rebound, get garbage buckets and set picks like a brick wall. For sure not one of the more talented ones, though.

Every center we've had in the past 40 years has had some deficiency - Russell was too short (and should have been a '2' or '3'), Wilkerson was too short to be a true '5', Curry was awesome on the offensive end but didn't play much defense and hardly ever bothered to rebound, etc. etc. If a player had all the tangibles and intangibles at that position, I suppose he'd not be at Marshall.

With Kambola and Smith now seemingly gone, I would like to see DD pick up a 6-8 Juco to play the middle.
