Putnam teachers voting at 7:30. You might hold off till then.

BC...you have to realize that just because a county superintendent opens school, that isn't necessarily a sign that the solidarity is weakening. There are several schools operating on delays. Why? To see if they will have anyone available in the morning.

A point though...I think the unions are caving a little. I heard that if an injunction was filed and fines issued, that they'd be on the hook for it with their members. The numbers thrown out there was that it would bankrupt the union in 8 days.

No clue if their softer stance is a result of that or they really believe the raise is happening and the PEIA freeze and place at the table for the union on the PEIS study is enough...but teachers were actually getting irate at their union reps today. The teachers were more committed than they were.

I just wonder how many people are going to show up tomorrow with their children because of the robo-call he made this evening declaring that school was back in session tomorrow.

there's a very, very fine line between the public agreeing and supporting them and the public demanding they get their asses back in the classroom. if it goes into next week, they're going to the lose a significant amount of public support.

Kind of makes you wonder what they do with all those dues if they can be bankrupted in 8 days.

Yup, unions are full of shit, collecting dues from every member's paycheck. They never seem to be able to support anyone other than politicians.

Keep in mind this would be a $500 fine per day, per union member. Over 8 days that $4000 per union member. WVEA has 15,000 members. I'm not sure how many of those are teachers and if they would be subject to the fine, but 15,000 times $4000 is $60 million dollars. If only half were subject to the penalty, that would still be a large chunk of change.

So the fine could destroy a union.

Putnam County is back to school tomorrow. I love it here.

Maybe the state wants it to go on. Ever thought about that?

In response to the teachers being ticked at the Union leaders, you're right...a overwhelming majority are. I heard JJ's press conference and I'm not even a teacher and felt it was empty...he didn't even address PEIA, which is what this whole thing is about to begin with. Justice also caved in a little when he saw the national news pulling up.

I also am hearing that the legislature is basically trying to "call on the union's bluff" about staying out. The teachers are posting pictures of legislative members sleeping, on cell phones, and doing basically everything but their jobs. As of today I heard the bill isn't even on the agenda. The teachers are holding out for a vote from the senate. Their union leaders say they should go back to work. Teachers disagree.

In short, it's become a pissing contest. Every day the teachers stay out, carmichael will push the bill back. Teachers are not going to go back until the bill is actually passed, because Justice is full of empty promises and nobody trusts him. It's become a power struggle between carmichael and the teachers of the state.

I honestly thought that there was a chink in the armor yesterday. With many union reps pleading with teachers to return to work it was causing a divide. I walked around listening to conversations. But counties rallied their troops and voted and the teacher response was overwhelming that they were holding to their principles without regard to what the union reps said. When we went to 55 counties last night I had a greater understanding as to how organic this movement is. The teachers might be beaten yet. Statewide solidarity is a fickle thing. But yesterday's actions send a message. Teachers are more tuned in than ever to the political process in WV. I'm thinking, even if they don't get what they want, that their voices will be heard loudly in the next few elections.

ever since an off-handed remark was made about the weight of these protesters, i can't help but notice it in every crowd shot - and i say that as a supporter. Insurance costs rise, i get it. But damn, they gotta do their part & at least try to be healthy.

That’s all of Wv dude. Fattest in the nation. Highest diabetes.

What's next? Norway is good at the winter Olympics?

Norway is also better than the U.S., per capita, in the Summer Olympics.

There are plenty of countries with similar climates as Norway who aren't nearly as good in the Olympics. Then, again, those countries probably institute your philosophy when it comes to youth athletics.

I was having a talk with a funeral director yesterday and he said they are starting to have trouble with cremation because people are generally so fat that they burn quickly in the incinerator and if they're not careful there won't be much left when it's done.
