There's a lot of talk in recent weeks of busting up the current conference in college football in favor of a more cost effective and regionally based model due to the economic impact of covid-19. Most of the talk seems more centered around the G5 and the FCS. Let's be honest there is no way the P5 is going to go with an equal across the board model.

Here you have ODU looking into leaving CUSA. Evidently playing in CUSA is costing him too much.

This article features quotes from Charlotte's Chancellor saying there needs to be a look toward more regionally based realignment.

On the surface it just sounds as if schools such as ODU and Charlotte have bitten off more than they can chew and this outbreak is just exacerbating their already difficult situations. Maybe they're all forced to drop back down.

But let's say we don't have a season or we do and it's decided the games have to be played in empty stadiums. Donations, season ticket revenue, walk up revenue, concessions, and advertising revenue are gone in either scenario. There's still network shares from the TV deals, but those aren't enough to keep some teams viable.

There are currently 65 G5 teams spread over 5 conferences and Independents.

Here are current team locations.

Alabama - South Alabama, Troy, UAB
Arkansas - Arkansas St
California - Fresno St, SDST, SJST
Colorado - Air Force, Colorado St
Connecticut - UCONN
Florida - FAU, FIU, UCF, USF
Georgia - Georgia Southern, Georgia State
Hawaii - Hawaii
Idaho - Boise St
Illinois - NIU
Indiana - Ball State
Kentucky - WKU
Louisiana - LaTech, Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayett, Tulane
Maryland - Navy
Massachusettes - UMASS
Michigan - CMU, EMU, WMU\
Mississippi - S.Miss
Nevada - Nevada, UNLV
New Mexico - New Mexico, New Mexico St
New York - Army, Buffalo
North Carolina - Appy State, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, ECU
Pennsylvania - Temple
Ohio - Akron, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Kent State, Miami, OHIO, Toldeo
Oklahoma - Tulsa
Tennessee - Memphis, MTSU
Texas - Houston, North Texas, Rice, SMU,Texas St, UTEP, UTSA
Utah - BYU, Utah St
Virginia - Liberty, ODU
West Virginia - Marshall
Wyoming - Wyoming

The MAC, CUSA, AAC, and the Sun Belt are all closely located to each other. The MWC schools are pretty far away from each other and the other four conferences. It's crazy to look at. Even giving some of the CUSA West schools to the MWC doesn't make sense. With the exception of UTEP.

So for the sake of keeping all 65 teams and not creating an actual new conference. We'll keep the MWC as is and then add New Mexico St.

So the MWC will have 14 teams and be as follows.
Air Force, Boise St, BYU, Colorado St, Fresno St, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, New Mexico St, SDSU, SJSU, UNLV, Utah St, Wyoming

Since the CUSA brass always seem to be Texas Biased here is the new CUSA. There will be 13.
Houston, LaTech, ULL, ULM, North Texas, Rice, S.Miss, SMU, Texas St, Tulane, Tulsa, UTEP, UTSA

The Sun Belt will have 12 teams and would go as follows.
Ark St, FAU, FIU, Ga Southern, Ga State, Memphis, MTSU, S.Alabama, Troy, UAB, UCF, USF

The MAC would have 13 teams and go as follows
Akron, Army, Ball State, BGSU, Buffalo, CMU, EMU, Kent St, UMASS, NIU, Toledo, UCONN, WMU

The AAC will have 13 teams and would go as follows.
Appy St, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina, Cincinnati, ECU, Liberty, Marshall, Miami (OH), NAVY, OHIO, ODU, Temple, WKU,

You could have even conferences with 12 per conference if you leave BYU, Army, Libery, UMASS, and New Mexico out, but for fun I added them. We'll just assume that it will be no longer economically feasible function without conference money.

How would you divide the conferences?

What programs could you see dropping down to the FCS or dropping football all together.
