Is he staying, retiring, leaving, fired by new AD, any word/rumors? Clock is ticking if new AD is shopping.

Just saw where South Carolina canned Frank Martin... Dude led the program to its only final four ever in 2017. South Carolina was 18-13 this season.

In his 15 years as a head coach, Martin has gone to a Final Four, an Elite Eight, and made the NCAA or NIT 7 times.

If guys like that are getting sent packing then why would DD be retained?

This will determine if basketball is to be taken seriously as a legitimate sport or not.

It really is that simple. Will Marshall be content to be another FIU, or does Marshall strive to be a Murray State, a Belmont, or even a New Mexico State?

We're on the clock, with only a few months to go prior to entering a new conference.

The University of South Carolina. SEC. It Just Means More. Knowledgeable involved fan base. Students and alumni who self-selected themselves for that school over many other options to some degree over a desire to be a part of its sports culture. Long basketball history, even considering the football first nature of the SEC and of the South. Vast alumni network involved in building every aspect of the school. Happy with a FF run, but understanding that every year is important. Fanbase demands excellence.

Marshall University. CUSA/SBC. Football conferences made up of teams who drug along basketball and everything else at vastly different levels, many making token efforts, many unable to make more than a token effort. Aging, false nostalgic fan base with bad memories of past glory that never really happened and a very limited understanding of the modern game of basketball. Easily fooled and went crazy over an 8 day run (five more and we are even with Morehead State). Students and alumni pretty much go there because either they are smart and understand that WV really only has two colleges that are legitimate academic institutions and this is the best of the two (by far) and/or because they are from Huntington and this is the 13th-16th grade, many with no real interest in sports. Run by a small cabal of the local gentry, opinions of other really not welcome. Judges coaches in both major sports more on the words at the top of their diploma than anything else. Fanbase is happy with a token effort.

That is it. A place like USC demands excellence. A place like MU is happy with a token effort. Provided the coach is an alum, has a folksy hick act, and is connected to the power elite.

The new AD isnt going to make a move on the #2 revenue sport in his first week on the job I can tell you that. He'll take a full year and then either hope DD retires, or the team plays better and he stays. I seriously doubt the first thing he does on the job is fire a guy who's still beloved by half the fanbase as his first thing he does. Same can be said for any internal personnel decisions within the department.

the real question is....what do the money folks think about DD ? not the loudest cries on message boards from fans that likely don't even buy season tickets much less donate.

Dd contract is up #1 so there is no 1 year extension unless the new AD ok it. #2 said contract is up now just go find a new coach/coaching staff not just the easy on staff favorite guy to replace DD. Go into the SBC with a much better coaching staff and overall team.
This is the most painless avenue. The contract is up. There's no termination or buyouts. We have a new AD and a new school President. The right time. The best time. Is now.

Dan getting another deal, regardless of length, signals homecooking politics or that MBB really isn't a focus for the athletic department.

I wouldn’t say that South Carolina athletics demands excellence, outside of women’s basketball.

My guess is, not very seriously.
Crickets were heard when DD propsoed a new basketball arena along Hal Greer. He proclaimed if MU had that, they'd be contenders every year, or something.

Spears has the easy out here as DD’s contract is expired I believe. No firing necessary.
Imagine if Spears brought Dan in to pitch his reasons for staying;

Dan: "Well...uh...COVID happened, so I blamed that. Then the MU president changed, so I blamed that. If I lose next season, I'm gonna blame you."

He can't be fired. He's no longer under contract with the university. As of right now Dan is the stapler guy in Office Space.
Contract not renewed = fired basically. Hope he decides to step down and we can have a very amicable parting - that would be best for all involved. We don't need a messy split.

True, that was pointed out to me in another post. Although not renewing his contract equates to being fired. Some might spin it that way.

Fired vs. not renewing a contract is a distinction without a difference.

Yes, it is technically true that DD’s contract has expired. That is just about the cost of firing him. No buyout. The decision to retain him or not is the same. And it comes down to if MU really wants to be serious about MBB or not, and if those new to power are willing to take on his major allies to do what is right for MU, or not.

who are his allies? sounds like Brad likes him a lot.

Brad sounds like he likes everyone a lot. The nicest guy you'll ever meet. Doesn't mean he wont make a tough decision.
oh I know that. Brad is super popular now, so is Spears who is his guy....so if DD is retained then Smith must be good with it. On the other hand, if they fire him, who are the "major allies" that Smith and Spears will take on?

anyway...will be interesting either way. either we keep him and everyone gets over their man crush on Brad or we don't, and if we don't it would be nice to know DD's major allies that will be upset.

I think it's clear to see what the money folks think, which is rah, rah, rah, let's bring on the 304 boys and lob up a bunch of 3s. As long as it's all about fielding a team, and pretending to care about the sport, then it's okay for the folks with dough.

It's the white trash poors like myself that make a difference though. You put out a shitty product, then you lose support. Come late October, early November, I'll be here once again to call out those who predict an 11-2, 12-1 OOC mark, as well as calling out those that predict the Herd to dominate the SBC.

Of course, there's always the once in every 40 years chance of getting hot for an 8 day stretch.

Demand more.

Isn't this the same scenario we went through with Doc and his contract expiring?

There is no way in ##$$ that DD gets a two year extension after this season. I would bet he gets one year deal. I doubt that a new Pres and AD want to deal with the pushback of at least 50% of the fans who actually go to games and give to the Big Green. If DD can right the ship next year then I would be happy for him. I like him and appreciate what he has done for the program. However If he duplicates this years record next year then the writing will be on the wall. This is just the nature of how college sports goes these days. I am confident DD understands this and would bow out gracefully at that time. If not then they have a way out and can say we are not going to renew his contract.

A one year deal makes him a certified lame duck... With what we have coming back, there is no reason to think this team will be markedly better next year than it was this year. Unless DD has 3-4 stud freshman/transfers ready to come on board that no one knows about (he doesn't) next year is going to be this year minus Kinsey.

A two year deal is probably what they would do. A clear signal that MBB is a token effort. As to DD being labeled a “lame duck”, so what? Like somebody is going to use that status against him in recruiting? No body else wants any of the players he is recruiting.
