BB Schedule

It really does seem like our previous administration or may Dan just really doesn't try to be a top tier program. I mean look at football and how we schedule. There's usually a pretty exciting game or two every year during the OoC slate. Most of the OoC MMB slate is pretty boring and we darn sure never get them at home.

How on earth are you going to energize your fan base when you really don't give them any type of product to get excited about. Sure. Sure. The die hards will show out, but the goal is not to reach those fans. You have them. It's to bring in the casual fan.

Crying about charter flights and not having a practice facility and then giving the fans Milligan is pretty arrogant and pathetic.
The scuttle was MH wasn’t big on b’ball, he wouldn’t let them do pre-season tourneys nor support them in a fashion some thought he should. Meister can likely shed more light on this though. Just posting what others have in the past.

Whatever the issues, Spears needs to rectify them and move b’ball forward

Not sure I believe that whole heartedly. Maybe a shred of truth that is embellished. Under Mike we saw the progrom elevate to an NCAA Tournament win. He did try and get Mike D before Dan so he tried.

Now I am more inclined to believe he was more focused on football and allocated a greater number of resources to football over MBB? Sure. Football is what pays everyone's bills. The university made that decision back in 1987.

That may have been or continues to be conflated into MH didn't care about MBB.

More money, charter flights, a practice facility, and whatever DD complains about these days isn't going to make him a better coach or recruiter. We see what he targets. That's why the program is in the shape it's in currently. An almost 80 year old HC that does not hit the recruiting trails or the HS tournament circuits nearly hard enough. Dan has been a lazy recruiter going back to the Frampton kid. How can Davidson's HC make the drive from NC to Poca, but Dan couldn't make the drive from Huntington.

No. We an aging HC with a legacy name that no one seems to have the balls to tell to retire. We had an opportunity for a completely clean break after last season as his deal had reached it end. Instead we're negotiating another deal. That was the decision of the new Pres and AD.

MBB is handled like a good old boys club and that's why it can't be a consistent champion.

Crying? I'd be disappointed in coach if he wasn't trying to elevate the program and charter flights matter. You lose credibility saying he doesnt try to be top tier then saying he cries about charter flights.

When was the last time a quality division one team came to Huntington. Memphis doesn't count, they were a conference team then. Last I can remember was Virginia Tech.

Same thing this year as all the years while MH was here….Danny and Mark Cline make the schedule each year….
Unless we can be in one of the handful of early season tournaments where travel and hotels are included which we’re not going to get invited to….it’s hard for Marshall to go to the small ones….big investment and some of those require “x” amount of tickets sold….not sure we could do that either.

This is a problem for a lot of mid major basketball programs... The schools in the P5 will play you, just not in your building. It's got to be either neutral site, as part of some event, or on the road.

The Global Sports Classic, or whatever the hell its called, is actually a pretty good scheduling tool for Marshall because it gives you two lower D1 opponents at home (wins), a comparable mid-major opponent (tossup), and one big name, Kentucky, Xavier, Indiana last year, etc. on the road.

Realistically, Marshall is only ever going to play 2-3 "big name" schools a year in best of times... DD doesn't want to spend the non-conference going on the road to P5 teams, nor should he. The key to improving the schedule is improving the mid-major opponents on the schedule and getting rid of the 2-3 garbage lower division games.

We have discussed at length the perfect formula for football OOC scheduling... So, in my opinion, here is the perfect formula for basketball OOC scheduling

2-3 "Big time" programs -- Neutral or on the road
-- Examples would be Kentucky, Indiana, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Tennessee, etc
5-6 "Comparable" mid-majors -- Split home/away
-- Examples would be Ohio, Kent State, East Tennessee State, VCU, Western Kentucky, Dayton, etc.
2-3 "Lower DI teams" -- Early in the season, at home
-- Examples would be Eastern Kentucky, William and Mary, NC Central, Austin Pea, etc.
1 "Cupcake" -- At home during finals week
-- Any D1 bottom feeder or in-state lower division team for a glorified mid-week scrimmage

Previous AD actually scheduled a marquee P5 game here and there.
Dan just crapped the bed constantly by even worse beatdowns than football when they played...and even they won a few games against the P5.

This scheduling is reminding me of DJ's inflated records as HC when he played absolutely nobody, would have a 12-2 record prior to playing anyone, and go 2-8 when the conference slate began.
But even Dan's gonna struggle.on that front as well.

MH didn't like bball but DD was also being obnoxiously controlling. Partly because of who he is and also because JJ is a big bball fan.
As said, he demanded a whole new arena, practice facility, etc and everything else be on hold saying that was the reason MU bball wasn't as good.
