HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Board of Governors approved the expansion of beer sales into the chairback sections on the west side of Joan C. Edwards Stadium in a Tuesday afternoon meeting. The measure had also been approved by the Big Green Scholarship Foundation Board.

Beer will now be available in sections 108, 110, 112, 114, 116 and 118.

Since 2005, beer had only been sold in the stadium’s Big Green Room and could not be taken outside. Moving forward, Big Green Room purchases will continue and cans of 16-ounce beer may also be purchased from servers in those sections.

Athletics will increase security measures in those sections this seasons and Sodexo, the University’s concessions vendor, will provide appropriate training to its staff members.

“Before moving forward with additional selling points, we felt this trial run, of sorts, was necessary,” said Marshall Director of Athletics Mike Hamrick. “This is a growing trend in college athletics and this approach has been used recently at other schools, including Ohio State, Penn State and Pittsburgh.”

Marshall will open the season at home against Morgan State on Sept. 10.

If it was because the logistics aren't in place to go all out this season, ok. Otherwise, this is typical Marshall doing stuff ass backwards...

Again we see how small we think. What a joke. I hope I'm never invited to a party hosted by Hamrick. You will get on piece of shrimp and a cube of cheese. Hamrick you need to listen to the entire football community not just a few wine sippers!

The east side drunks won't buy these beers anyway. Smuggle it in or jog to the car by captain d and chug it

Ohio State did it the same way. So did Pitt. They started selling beer in limited locations then the following year opened it up stadium wide.

If Hamrick is hosting the party I'm sure you would enjoy it. IMHO Hamrick is the best AD Marshall has had in my lifetime; he answers emails, he's always around to hear what the fans want and he listens to the fans and tries to accommodate them. Hamrick doesn't make this decision--the boss/BOR makes the call and they want a test run before having beer all over the Joan.

Since my first wing ding, Hamrick has been the best AD Marshall has had. He's active, he's questioning, he's thinking. Understanding that Marshall needed an IAF to address all of its sports, and getting it built was an epic accomplishment in a state like W.V.

Indeed he's asked Ahia State and Pitt. He's reached out, asked about how they launched beer sales and then made smart moves. Once the genie is out, if it's ugly, it's hard to get back in.

If nothing else I'll be eternally grateful he got us back to kelly green, and in short order.

So if you want to bitch, I get it, but be patient. When he hired Holliday I was like WTF???? That hire has proved me wrong now for 3.5 seasons, and probably many more to come.

So for me on the east side, it's still joyfully 2 mini bottles of rum, and maybe another season before a bud light! ;)

I don't give a shit what ohio state or Pitt do...and I bet most HERD fans feel the same. I am against OVER PRICED BEER sells in any section of The JOAN. You purchase an $8 Beer...you are expected to tip the guy, therefore, it is now a $10 Beer.

I strongly support half time exits and drinking my own BEER. I have attended games at Marshall for a LONG time and I have yet to see folks acting like asses from too much beer consumption.

Remember...WE ARE......MARSHALL...The FAMILY....we have other's backs....

You're against your alma mater making money because a voluntary action that you in no way whatsoever have to partake in is too expensive?

How in the world does that make sense?

Well good for them.

WVU and Louisville didn't do it that way. So I am going to flip your logic and say we are doing it wrong.

This will create confusion, and that's never a good thing.

how confusing can that be? anyone confused over this had to also be confused about the past ability to purchase beer in the BG room.

For 99% of fans the BG room might as well be Disneyland.

All people hear is "beer sales at the stadium". They will not hear only in certain sections. They will be confused.

And the chance to sell beer to a large visitor turnout for Louisville is also lost. Believe me, they drink; hell, they can buy liquor at their stadium. That's money down the toilet.

East Prime sections get screwed, as we pay a "donation" per seat as well as facility fee and have no Big Green room and now no beer! This is not what the East fans voted for!

Chris...it makes Cent$ to me. Yes, I know I do not have to purchase OVER PRICED BEER in The Joan. But it does effect me when I lose the right to exit at halftime.....this is "their way" of no longer permitting fans to exit before the game ends. This is one of the purposes of selling Beer in the stadium.....to control the amount of Beer consumed by a paying person to see a football game.!

I support Marshall making money in most way$===NOT BY SELLING BEER in The Joan. It is a family setting and I can see many non-drinking fans (yes, there are some at Marshall that do not drink adult beverages) being offended by folks around them consuming beer.

BTW...I am a 110%er to the Big Green Foundation......ARE you? So in my World...it makes Cent$ to me....not selling Beer inside The Joan. Thank you for your concern about my welfare.

Yep, 110% giver to the BG and Vision Campaign contributor.

Once again, your post leaves me a little confused.

Are you against beer in the Joan because you're taking a moral stand for the mass of Herd fans who get offended by someone in their close proximity drinking a Bud Light (boy, I hope those people never go anywhere, ever) OR are you against beer in the Joan because it will eventually mean you can't go get shitfaced in the parking lot at halftime?

Seems as those two things contradict either other, no?

Sell beer throughout the stadium and end pass outs. That's what all the big boys do.

So TWOLFHERDFAN...you are a member of the Big Boys Club. I hope to meet you on Game day so you can buy me a few BEERS in The JOAN at about $8.00 a pop PLUS $2.00 tip to the Beer Tenders.....then I will not have to be concerned about not being PERMITTED a Pass Out at halftime to drink my (less costly) Beer & Captain Morgan. Just where are your seats...I want to sit near you to get my FREE beers from The HERDwolf.....

Chris, I have NEVER been "shit faced" in the parking lot at The JOAN, nor during a game. I am a mature, drinking man now. If we went back to Fairfield during my college days...YES, I got "shit faced" a few times...no MANY times for the record. Hell, in my years at Marshall....our Kappa Alpha Order pledges carried coolers of BEER into Fairfield and we took a pee over the back wall.....or took a whiz in the stands without our dates looking.....

I am no Holy Roller by any means....but a lot of folks attending games at The JOAN do not drink.

I am against OVERPRICED BEER SALES in certain sections/any sections at The Joan..... and taking away my right to exit at halftime, (should I chose). I usually stay in my seat because I NOW enjoy the Marching Thunder perform.

Sweeney in Charlotte....HAVE I MADE MY STANCE CLEAR TO YOU?

since I live in TX don't really care either way. LOL but don't drink beer anyway so if I still lived in H-town still would not care. Give me some good bourbon at a bar stand then would be Alright!!!!!!!

As long as for the family people have the non alcohol sections (as most college stadiums have) alcohol on game day is a plus for the program. Close the gates for reentry and those that don't like it suck it up and deal with it. If you don't like alcohol sales go hang in the alcohol free areas, if you are too cheap to pay suck it up and deal with it. Get drunk before the game and drink the 5 dollar cokes. LOL

This whole thing strikes me as what committees do to f*** up things when they have to make a decision. Rather than do A or B, they try to split the difference. This is some kind of stupid compromise, when a decision was needed. Either sell beer, throughout the stadium excpet for some "family section" or don't. Don't try to split the baby.

So, does this mean that beer is only available from walking vendors in the chairback sections? Which will be way way way unable to keep up with demand. Or from a stand underneth? And if I legally buy a beer and sit down with it elsewhere, the walke-talking cops are going to do exactly what about it? If they do anything they are just going to cause bad feelings and drive away people.

Just sell beer.

it's more of a decision that at this time it isn't feasible to sell beer stadium-wide, but carry on with your normal irrational rant...

Have they said it isn't feasible? As I said above, if the logistics aren't in place for this season that is fine. Say so. No problem. If you just want to "test" it on the chairbacks that's dumb. You will not get a true feeling for this. Like it or not, a lot of the chair back clientele are in a different world than the majority of the stadium. You won't get an accurate sales count or estimation on problem drunks. So why do it this way?

i'm not sure if he posts here, but brad bobersky (president of the big green) posted this on someone's status on facebook yesterday:

"We do not have the restroom facilities to support closing the stadium for no re-entry. We do not have any restrooms in the endzone. The concourses are not wide enough to support closing the stadium off. We have to make upgrades to the stadium which costs significant money, which we just don't have right now. Numerous schools eased into alcohol sales and we are doing the same thing.

Imagine one thing if you will. The Louisville game. It is an 8pm kickoff. The game will be a sell out. Imagine the logistics of having the stadium closed for that game with no entry. Imagine the chaos of not having ample restroom facilities and room in the concourses and throwing long beer lines in the mix.

The endzone seats were a big mistake. They were added with little thought to how the stadium could handle additional seats without adding restrooms and concourse space."

Posted these facts for years, few believed me that this stadium sits on a very small footprint and was done on the cheap.

Why don't they just do this.

You have the whole area that is covered by the suites and pressbox structure. All you have to do to close that area is to install a nice looking fencing from the ground up to the white, steel cross support beams. Doing this would be less than $50,000 and would double the concourse area on the west side of the stadium. Just pull up a street view of the west side of the stadium and you'll see what I'm talking about.

It would, of course, look better if it were bricked in, but that can always be done later. Within this area you could be porta toilets, 8-10 on each side. I don't think bathroom capacity is really the issue though, just a strawman. The only extra bathrooms picked up in the pass out is the porta toilets in the lot.
