BG email on beer sales at the Joan

Someone may be against alcohol due to an issue with themselves having a problem or family member, father, etc. being an abusive alcoholic. Who knows. Not our place to judge. Everyone has their opinion.

If we really believe that our fan base is special; why would we make this major change. Many prefer to not be around alcohol for various reasons and it will keep some from attending and being exposed. It's too easy to stay home and not be frustrated.

i get that, and respect that. i have several recovering alcoholics in my family, including in my immediate family. that said, i respect them when it comes to those situations, and they respect that it's not their place to tell me what to consume, not consume.

this isn't a poll to decide if marshall will force every individual entering the joan to chug a beer, it's a poll to determine if of age adults can purchase and consume alcohol in the stadium by their own choice.

hint: if you attend games now, you're around alcohol and drunks.

If we add MU admin makes the statement up front, drink responsibly , and drunks will be ejected.

Last year at the FIU game I think it was, a guy was drunk and catcalling the FIU team. Marshall security got his sorry arse by the arms and nearly drug him out of the stadium. It was sad but kinda funny at the same time, as the guy pled with the security guys to let him stay. His feet couldn't keep up with the dragging, and the security guy was like right buddy, your out!

I'll be honest, to NOT have to worry about mini bottles is a positive thing for this Marshall fan!

Yes Sam craft beers are a good thing, bud light is water with yellow coloring. Some local Brewer would
Relish the chance to get his beers in front on a larger audience. Again , good for the state.

a-b and/or millercoors beers are going to be sold. the demographics for craft beers just isn't massive like the a-b/millercoors products out there. hopefully we do it like wvu, they sell bud light and miller light (also maybe coors light, and other a-b/millercoors products), but they also have a deal with morgantown brewing to sell a couple of their brews.

WKU sells beer, and their stadium was very family-friendly. Didn't see one person out of control when I was there. Same for Texas games I've been to. I didn't go to Akron and Kent, but they both sell beer. Did anybody see anything bad happen there?

Milan Puskar Stadium is just a haven for assholes. This was true long before they sold beer inside the stadium, and I'm sure it's still true now. Families will be just fine in the Joan.
The behavior at Mountaineer Field has improved immensely since they started selling beer, disallowing re-entry, and policing the gates and stands. I mean it's like night and day different. I know you haven't paid attention, but WVU fans have had nothing but glowing reports from the Big XII fan bases who have visited MPS. You are right; MPS used to be a haven for drunken assholes, but thankfully, those days appear to be over.

I think other stadiums have observed similar outcomes. I think you will see the same at MU.

Congrats. Behavior could have improved by 100%, and it would still be the worst in the country.

I have actually heard that things have improved there, but I think it has more to do with Luck begging fans to be on their best behavior for the new conference mates more than anything.

There have been numerous reports showing that selling beer inside stadiums actually helps reduce incidents and arrests.

Check this article out (mentions WVU in particular): http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/09/sports/ncaafootball/beer-alcohol-college-football-west-virginia.html?_r=0

And I'm sorry, but if you think The Joan is some sort of refuge from drunks you must sit in a sky box. Just about every game I've attended over the past few years has included some sort of alcohol related incident INSIDE the stadium.

Spot on. Have had season tics in section 109 for several seasons. A lot of the regs around us go out at halftime and come back in mid to late 3rd Qtr, or 4th Qtr., a lot more "loaded" or even highly "buzzed" than they would say if confined to stadium and only could purchase beer in the stadium. Should do something similar to major league teams (would have said the Reds, but after off season departures, can't say that ML term still applies) and halt alky sales at certain point in game (end of 3rd Qtr.?).

I believe that the alcohol scare is overrated. Many studies show drunkiness decreases because it cuts down on binge drinking. Drinking and no drinking areas could be set up.

iMHO if you build it they will come ! Improve the atmosphere in which fans never want leave. That means investments in stadium and added features.

Hammick has done great bringing back the colors and jumbo screen. Now we need updated food and consession . Family picnic area , TV , bathrooms, concourse. We all saw the grade on stadium review. Love the Joan but might need a facelift like Joan rivers. (Too soon?)

If you build it they will come. Yes to alcohol , money needed for Marshall and next step

Correct, the fire marshal will never permit a closed policy due to the very limited area under the stands. It's very crowded and inconvenient under those grandstands.

What does pass outs have to do with that? Fire Marshall could give a rats ass about our ticketing policy.

I haven't bought a drink or concessions at the stadium in years because I can walk out to my tailgate and grab a burger or whatever, a beer and listen to scores/highlights of other games.

If I could get a burger or brat/sausage, a beer and watch scores/highlights on a TV monitor in the concourse at halftime, I would never consider leaving.

Marshall has one of the most hospitable fan bases in America. We welcome opposing fans into our tents & tailgates & offer them a beer (or even liquor) & I haven't heard a single person worried their kids are being corrupted or in some sort of danger. How is it that when a proposal for $8 beers is suggested, people act like we're going to suddenly have full-blown MMA bouts going on in the stands? Do people think we're teetering on the line of anarchy?

IMHO,

- Contrasting the way WVU fans act to MU fans, or to any other group of normal people, is apples to oranges. MU fans, and fans of most any other program you can name, are ordinary people, 99% of which can handle alcohol in a responsible way. WVU fans are made up of the lowest elements of WV society, drunken empty-lived hilljacks who have never been anywhere or done anything (going somewhere and doing something inoculates you against the idiocy you have to believe to buy into the WVU sports act) and drunken c-student New Jersites and a minority of WVian students who actually want to be around such people. MU fans will handle beer sales just fine. Different people.

- Leaving for halftime and tailgating is a part of it at MU. Doing a "lock in" might be a long term goal, but it is going to cause issues.

- There is a term for people that only like craft beer. It is called "people that really don't like beer".

- The stadium does need a basic cleaning. We need to push out and have more understand room, put in TVs, and gut and redo the restrooms. Personally I think the concessions are OK, its 3 1/2 hours. I don't come there to eat a meal.

LOL, Sam don't sugar coat your love of the eerbilly fan base! I literally almost threw up when an eerbilly on this thread said B12 fans adore the atmosphere at their venue. The couple that lives in the town home beside me , one went to Auburn one to LSU, they drove the 12 hours for the AU game and said what the hell is that?!?!? As he got out of his car he was cussed and threatened!!!!! I told him, I told you so! Then to add insult to injury of course they beat up a pregnant mom from the LSU fan base. That too made its way back to my neighbors via some of their friends. But they can't figure out why the ACC won't even entertain them. LOL!

Sam, some people don't want to drink dog pee. Craft beer is more a hearty beer, has an actual taste, usually has a higher alcohol content and possibly some decent B vitamins, it's a damn health drink it is!

Yeah Hambone has a tough deal, trying to squeeze blood from the turnip, but men's football drives the athletic bus, and to NOT invest is a mistake.

Some inlaid bricks v asphalt , a nice rod iron with brick bottoms fence, some well placed TVs a few tables a few beer stands and you probably won't miss a cent vs the new TV contract. Oh yeah and paint the peeling steel beams, and replace the rusting urinals, PLEASE!

I agree abut the food there. If I get hungry at a game, I never do, I could get a hot dog or pretzel. I much prefer to wait a couple hours and go to Rocco's for dinner. As for beer, I don't drink the stuff but is amuses me that all of a sudden people on here blast Bud, Coors etc and feel they must have craft beer. Tell me what you drank, and enjoyed up until the past few years? I'll bet that it was Bud, Coors etc.
It's a football game. I go to watch football. I drive to the stadium about 30 minutes before kickoff, enter the stadium, watch the game and then go out to dinner. That is why I love all these earlier kickoffs. Makes for a great day and evening.

Closing the main lot doesnt do a whole lot imo... those people have already paid quite a bit to be in those spots and most have chairbacks as well which would already give them access to beer inside the stadium. Others gathering in the lot and not having tickets will just wonder to other lots or not come at all. I would say they may need to lower rates for the lot if they close it after kick off bc people put some effort into it and with as many early games as we had it wouldnt be worth it for some to even tailgate. I could care less about any of it though. I tailgate (not on main lot) then come into the game and stay til its over then go back to the tailgate for a bit but i have also tailgated an entire game in years past also. i understand some people love the school but aren't really football fans (i know clayton bigsby type revelation there lol) so they donate their tickets and just tailgate which is completely fine imo

What does pass outs have to do with that? Fire Marshall could give a rats ass about our ticketing policy.

FM does care about having as clear a path as possible for emergency exits and /or emergency personnel. Encouraging people to walk outside the current entrance gates serves that purpose, no re-entry leads to gridlock under the grandstands. As some have suggested alter the footprint of "inside the stadium" and you could resolve that issue.

Funny how we told those displaced by the new ticket policy to suck it up and stop whining - it's what's best for Marshall.
To those whining they can't go out at halftime - I say the same thing.

Tailgate before, have a beer or two during the game and tailgate after. No big deal.

Sell beer and no pass outs. Get butts in seats!

I haven't been there since they started selling beer, but I could see where this would be true. Thanks for the input.

Close the lots = Those people just won't show up at all.
No reentry = Those people will still leave and just not come back now.
Sell beer. Drunk people are still at the games anyway, so we might as well make something from it.

Kind of off topic but why do they not have radio feed in the bathrooms in the Big Green room?? They have them in regular bathrooms not the bathroom for Big Green?? I always go to regular bathrooms during game so I don't miss a play.

Without using some reasoning like "You come to the game to watch marshall, and shouldn't leave at half because a true Herd fan wouldn't.." (Not saying this is you)

Please explain to me the benefits to the program of a no Pass Outs policy, and why it would be vital to the implementation of beer sales?

Legitimate question. There may very well be a compelling reason, I just haven't heard one yet.

The reason is simple. If you want to drink beer, then you MUST buy their $7 beer and not our beer in the lots.

Beer, beer, beer... We need to have a fiscal note done to see what the potential revenue from beers sales would be? And if this measure fails... Then those who are so strongly opposed to beer sales should be hit with a surcharge to help cover the cost of the lost revenue...

The last I heard was wvu beer sales amounted to about $200k added revenue. Not much for a stadium that sells 2-3 times more tickets than we do.

i'm not sure if you're just making stuff up to further support your anti-beer stance, or what, but per shane lyons this year, "approximately $500,000 a year just in beer comes back to us.” [1]

wvu at most draws double what we draw, so either way, we're still looking at a couple hundred thousand dollars in added revenue for our fiscally starved athletic department.

we are about to lose $500k per year with our "new" TV deal...... sell the damn beer....... it won't offset, but it will help some..............
