DL also holds the rank of 3rd dan black belt in Kyokushin karate and was European champion in 1980-81.

Bill Nye's niche is being an advocate of science. I think he's knowledgeable, but his real benefit I think is being the public face of many issues. The problem is he isn't a very nice guy. Actually, he's pretty much a jerk. We've had a void since Carl Sagan. NDGT does okay, but he certainly isn't Sagan. Sagan was educated, eloquent, and inspiring. I miss him.

Has anyone watched Nye's new program on Netflix? It's catching a little flack on reddit. I haven't seen it yet but hope to catch a few episodes this weekend.

I hate to give wvu any credit, but one of their alums (and a morganhole native) does a great job in the STEM/entertainment field.

Emily Calandrelli has a B.S. in aerospace engineering from wvu, a B.S. in mechanical engineering from wvu, and a Masters in Aeronautics and Astronautics and a Masters in Technology and Policy, both from M.I.T.

She hosts and produces a Saturday morning nationally televised show on Fox called Xploration Outer Space and is a field correspondent on Bill Nye Saves the World.

She's authored a STEM book for children, done numerous high-level internships at NASA, etc., is a contributing writer for TechCrunch, and had her own TEDx event last year.

. . . and she is still in her 20s and is hot.

She's not as smug as Nye, a better speaker, and better educated.

Be sure to watch this ice cream orgy show

Nye is not a scientist by training, he is a mechanical engineer. The guy was a stand up comic(still is) and is a total television creation. I remember my daughter(a real scientist) laughing at him 20 years ago as being full of it.

Being a mouth-piece for science doesn't make one "full of it." He is very knowledgeable on the subject as a whole.

I agree with this. Nye, like NDGT, as the public faces of science issues are knowledgeable on a wide variety of topics. Nye has written books on GW (Unstoppable) and evolution (Undeniable). These books are well received. Although he's starting to fall out of the public favor recently, it doesn't mean he's a joke. At least he's out there fighting the battle and promoting these issues. Specialist in science often do a poor job of promoting their field due to poor communication skills. Nye is necessary.

Bill Nye is an "advocate for science" in the same way Robert Mugabe is an "advocate for democracy".

I said he was an advocate of science, not for science. I also said he was an advocate for science issues...not science solely. No single person can speak for the entirety of science.

I really don't know much about Erlichian population control theories but I'll look into it. I see your point and in light of some of Nye's recent off the wall comments I'm losing some respect for him. I thought he did decent on his books (Undeniable, Unstoppable) and enjoyed both. I thought he did well debating Hamm on issues of young earth and evolution. But some of his recent comments are unhinged. He actually suggested denialist be treated as war criminal and be subject to jail time. I disagree with denialist but that's just crazy...

Ouch...that's pretty bad. I think Nye's attempt at edgy is missing the mark.

I just crossed this thread on Reddit talking about Nye's new show on Netflix.

After looking forward to this series (and watching some of the clips) I can't even bring myself to watch it. Nye had such a great opportunity here. He was riding a wave of popularity from recent years and he had a perfect opportunity advance some of the issues of science and do some good. Instead, he chose to sell out science in some weak attempt to be edgy. He's abandon what should be his core mission...to educate people on the issues of science (the lady he brought to the dance). It looks like the attention he's received has gone to his head.
