Birdsong?

What scares me about Birdsong was the big number of interceptions he threw. 22 to 15 td to int ratio and completing right at 60% of his passes. And that was at the FCS level.

It's just hard to get super excited about that, his decision making and accuracy is simply going to have to improve - it's not all about size and arm strength (see Cato)

Maybe it's because of line play or lack of talent at WR. Shouldn't look at the Interception numbers, Cato had a high interception number also

This is the best "problem" to have for neXT season. Four young dudes that can all potentially be the starter, all have an unknown factor to them leading all of us to sit and wonder, and four potentially new twists to the offense. I, for one, love it.

I just hope Doc runs the hell out of everyone come spring and summer, so the hurry up can get a little more hurried.

Regardless of who wins the QB job I really wish we still had Peterson on staff to help develop all of these guys over the next couple of years...we didn't feel the loss of Tony because Cato was already so well established but with less experienced QBs running our offense in the coming years someone is going to have to step up and help develop these guys.

One of the biggest factors in Cato's maturation was his relationship with Chad. Hopefully Chad will have the same level of involvement with our future quarterbacks.

not down on him... he just doesn't the talent that Birdsong and Litton seem to have.
Cato didn't have the talent Graham had either...remember?

Birdsong has a lot of potential, but I'd wait until he takes the job from our current backup before I crown him QB.
I was one of them. In the end, Cato played, and showed he had the ability to lead us, so I was perfectly fine with it. Unlike other seasons where a guy got picked that clearly couldn't lead us to anything. As long as you can make us a winner, I don't care if you're "my guy" or not. Just win!

Not down on Gunnar, just think Litton is a beast - i'd like to see him start as a true freshman and get 4 years right of the bat like Cato did......with what i've seen, he'll compete for the job and big time! unless the coaches are already set on the redshirt

sounds good to me! i'm going to watch his film from JMU - any idea what inspired his transfer other than coming to MU from JMU? i mean, did we go after him, or did he find us?
An assistant at Georgia Tech got the HC job at JMU and changed the offense from a pro-style offense to that aweful option stuff that GT runs, and the assistant also talked GTs bakcup QB into transferring down to run it. Birdsong is a terrible fit for the offense so he looked to transfer and his lead recruiter at JMU just happen to be our J.C.Price, one of our DL coaches, and the rest is history. FWIW, from reports, he looked very good in practice, and should really challenge Holcomb, Garvin, and Litton for the job.

Johnson will almost certainly stay. He would be a very late pick on the last day if he declared. He is best suited to play fullback and special teams at the next level and he could really benefit from another year in building his resume. Fullbacks are almost never drafted before the late rounds. In the unlikely case Johnson would leave to the NFL, we would still have Butler, Watson (one of whom I think may transfer assuming Johnson is here), Pittman, and Byrd plus some assorted redshirts, talented freshmen and props coming in.
No he is a powerback with terrific vision. Think Bettis instead of a blocker.

"A Caucasian Leftwich" is an awful big billing for Birdsong to live up to & Garvin throwing 4 INTs his senior year in High school does not make him Pennington.

Birdsong is a big kid with a good arm, but nowhere near Byron's. He's more like Blake Frohnapfel (which there's nothing wrong with that).
Garvin has Cato's height, but more muscular, with probably less of an arm than Cato. Not 6'3 220 like Pennington was.
Garvin's videos reminded me of Brees in terms of his pocket movement, release, and ball flight. One thing that Garvin is suppose to have is very good leadership qualities and that is something our coaches value highly at the position. I believe we will see a much improved player in Garvin this Spring as he really wasn't competing for the QB2 job last Spring or this Fall as he was always going to redshirt. Since I believe Litton will redshirt this year, I believe the competition will be between Holcombe, Birdsong, and Garvin.

I just don't understand why people can't get over Tony Peterson
I agree, I actually thought Cato developed more working with Legg and having Pennington tudor him on occasion. The way I look at it is that Peterson left a position as Co-OC at MU with Bill Legg to be the Co-OC at La Tech with Tim Rattay so I am not of the opinion that he a great coach.
