They are planning on bringing back football at the D2 level. Hopefully, Doc retires before Bluefield starts so that he only has to continue battling FCS schools for his current recruits instead of an in-state school.

They used to have some decent teams well back in the day. They have a really good area to recruit down in Southern WV, plus Graham High School is relatively close by.

Yeah, the current President there, Robin Capehart, was an administrator back in the day at MU. Believe he also was in the cabinet of Governor Rockefeller at one time.

BSC is currently building some new dorm facilities. Will allow students to live on campus for the first time in decades. Trying to increase their enrollment at the school. Adding football and some other sports is part of the plan. Nearby Bluefield College (VA) has had football for about 4 or 5 years now. BSC won't lack for opponents if they can hook up with the same league Bluefield College is in, or similar level leagues. BC is either D-2 or NAIA, playing schools in TENN and KY, like Pikeville, Union, etc.

What are they planning to participate in? NCAA D2 or NAIA D2? Huge difference. Mountain East teams are NCAA D2, so that would seem to be the logical conference to join. Bluefield College (Virginia) actually plays their home football games at Bluefield High School (West Virginia).

Actually it really depends on the league they play in. My daughter played NAIA soccer and competed against many D2 teams that weren’t very good.
Capehart said they will likely align with an HBC league based in NC.

They want to increase enrollment and bringing in 350 Athletes on partial scholarships will help the bottom line.

As we can imagine, at many of the small schools, athletes make up a significant portion of the student body.

This sounds like a golden opportunity for Coach Rifle, due to his previous experience with an HBCU program. Could potentially lead him to one day being the HFC at The Marshall University.

Considering all of the problem children who Doc recruits that get dismissed, Bluefield could get a decent amount of talent heading their way.

If Bluefield can’t out recruit Doc on kids, they know they have a good chance of eventually getting them anyways.

Capehart was one of my favorite professors at Marshall.
I met Robin back in 1978 while attending Teenage Rep****can camp in Cowan, WV. Very smart guy. But my most striking memory of him was at the end of a MU vs WVU b-ball contest in Charleston. He went to wvu and had been keeping up a pretty obnoxious back & forth while sitting in our Herd crowd. Really close loss. In the 5 seconds or so after the horn sounded, he was really giving it to us. A young lady who was sitting directly in front of him turned around and poured a full cup of co-cola right on top of his head!! We fell out.....

He got in trouble while the president of West Liberty and was forced to resign. I forget all the details but I seem to believe it had something to do with ethics.
I also remember him being a Republican primary candidate for governor in 2004

And, they will definitely be on the schedule.

Actually, Bluefield College plays its games at Mitchell Stadium, a city owned facility that seats 10,000. Both Bluefield High, in WV, and Graham High, in Bluefield, Virginia, play their home games there too. The Stadium was build in the 1930s as part of FDR's economic recovery programs (WPA, perhaps) and is in good shape, undergoing recent upgrades, new turf, video boards, etc. Actually, in a poll conducted last year by USA Today, Mitchell Stadium was voted the best High School Stadium in the country. Will certainly be busy if Bluefield State also plays their home games there, too.

you're right. I always thought it was the Beavers stadium, but it's not. Last game I was at in that stadium was either 79 or 80, and it was a college freshman game between WVU and I believe they were playing Va Tech. A friend of ours from high school played for WVU, so we loaded up the station wagon with beer and drove down.
