Butch Davis' Recruiting

And Tyson Bagent from Martinsburg is making an official visit there in Jan.
They have already signed two QBs in the class, and haven't even offered him.

The two JUCOs DTs is what makes their class a really good one but both are have suspect character as you are pretty messed up if you get kicked off the E. Miss CC team. They would likely both be 1-and-done at FIU so they will have minimal long term impact, but the class is good overall and will potentially make them a top 3rd team in a couple of years if they are able to keep them in the program.

Accurate. He may be visiting but it’s not an “official” visit. He’d get a walk-on opportunity at most.

Well the family is not paying for a trip. Where did you hear this? FIU site? He could take a walk on at WVU so it would not be FIU. Unless FIU has changed which is possible he was sch to make an OV in Jan

It’s simple logic. Like @pdbailey said, they’ve already signed two QB’s and they haven’t even offered Bagent. The odds of a school offering an official visit to a kid (after signing two others at the same position) that they haven’t offered are slim to none.

That last sentence sounds eerily familiar to a school we all know.

I knew once those FL schools got Davis and Kiffin that we would have our hands full. They have south FL locked up and they have a big name and higher pedigree than our coaches or any coach in our conference.

Meh...
Kiffin took the conference by storm as did Butch, but lets not begin to annoint either as some demigod programs.
With 6 INT's, horrible game prep, rain, no fans, and an OC everyone hated, MU was competitive with both of them. MU simply ran out of time against FIU and Litton served FAU 4 possessions.
I'm not saying they aren't both good coaches and their programs have resurged for sure, but lets not surrender ourselves and gravel to their feet because they had 1 good season.

Josh, after you said this I checked, and the family is still getting calls from FIU and at this point they are expected to still make an OV in Jan. ODU is this the same. Now, I will admit this is a twist to the story but contact is still being made by both sides at this point no one has discussed a walk-on and no one has said the family needs to pay for the visit. I would agree this is a little more interesting but time will tell

Agreed also Saint Lane lost to Buffalo this year so it wasn’t like they were unbeatable.

We can keep telling ourselves this. But the reality is an established program with a “recruiting genius” as a head coach couldn’t beat these “nobody” programs (because they hired real head coaching experience).

Most of you laughed at the idea when I stated they would be rolling us within two years after they got hired. They are ahead of schedule.

Although not in our league....remember, Charlie Strong will be sucking a lot of talent up out of Florida too. Unless we get a hell of an upgrade at OC, the middle of the pack is where we will be finishing consistently for the foreseeable future.

You can pay for an OV for a Preferred Walk-on.
We will see, but as one person said, any school looking to add a QB late is looking at the board and seeing what players are still available. When some see a Gatoraide State player of the year still on the board its going to get looks.

A single conference championship in 8 years does not build your pedigree, even in C-USA.

So 1 good season makes you a somebody?
Kiffin's biggest downfall is his past as well as his lack of stability amongst any program he's in. You don't think Doc, Davis, Strong, and everyone else in FL is going to not mention that?
Plus, most potential recruits know this, and with the idea of having 1 good season, they may be hesitant in wanting to join on, knowing once he's gone, they could be back to square one.

Davis is pretty much going to retire from this job I assume. Once more, he's not in any position to make major strides with FIU. I imagine if you got FIU's AD drunk, he'd admit he probably didn't even think Davis could make them relevant.
However, FIU also isn't expecting the CFP anytime soon. They'll be perfectly happy with 8 wins a season for the next 5 years running, because for them, who have hardly ever had any real success, would consider that stable and fine with it.

Bottom line, would you play college football in Miami, Florida? Most (17-24) year old young men are going to say yes, especially if your coach was successful at both levels.

I'd say you, Hamrick and a few others would be fine with 8 wins a year in the next 5 seasons as well. Considering our latest recruiting rankings, that may be an ambitious goal.

One these are not the final rankings and two Doc took a lot of local kids that honestly I think are really good players. Owens is one!

After a 3-9 season, 8 wins is fine for the following year.
Double digit wins on out.
You expect wrong.

One thing I don't care for is recruiting local talent for the sake of local talent. If they are good, go for it. If not, then don't bother.

In this shitty league???? Yes. Yes it does.

We have 1 conf title in 8 and many Herd fans still think we are something special.

So...why is it whenever someone else does well in C-USA, they are some sort of 2nd coming of Alabama, but when MU does it, it cannot be and C-USA sucks and literally everything negative?

Who said anything about these Florida teams or MU being the next Alabama? Christ. You seem to be missing the point.

Kiffin takes a team (that everyone claimed was total shit) to conference champs in one year. Marshall accepts “we are young and rebuilding” in perpetuity.

Mock the hires of Kiffin and/or Davis all you want. They seem to be doing exactly what they were hired to do. Compete for championships (in a shitty league) in short order.

When the hell did I mock either's hiring? I said Kiffin wasn't going to last because he was just looking for another gig...and basically, it's what everyone in the sports world was thinking as well...in fact, they still do.
Considering that some on this thread are already laying down and handing lubricant to FAU and FIU, tells me they're ready to just give up...and then complain about MU. That's declaring either FIU or FAU to be the next Bama.
Kiffin did something that is not often seen in football. It's very rare for a coach to come in, take the reins, and win a conference championship in year 1.
But then again, you claim the conference is garbage, yet are defending the idea of Kiffin being some sort of great coach. FIU fell pretty badly out of the running late in the season, but no, because Butch Davis is at the helm, you can't say that, because they're competing for championships...forgetting MU was also in the hunt for the East as well.
Again, why do you piss on MU and stroke FIU and FAU?
Either this conference is terrible and winning it negates any real skill, because that's what is said about Doc.
Or
This conference isn't half bad and it has become competitive for anyone to win it.
You can't have it both ways.

Uhhhhh. Yes I can have it both ways. It is very possible for a league to be shitty and yet have good/decent coaching. That’s how most coaches move up and grow there careers.

Who is pissing on MU and stroking FIU/AU? Just stating the facts. Someone has to win the league. Might as well be a program that hired a solid coach. You said it yourself, it’s rare for a team to be turned around in a year. I originally predicted it would take at least 2. (Many mocked that assertion) That doesn’t mean anyone is declaring them the next Alabama. Your hyperbole is ridiculous.

When Marshall loses the mind set that it should take a coach 4-8 years to rebuild a program, the championships may return. Until then, we are left with superfans talking about free T-shirt nights or dreams about multi million $$$ renovations/pool decks on half empty stadiums.

I'm thinking several of our early signees will become major contributors before it's over with.
They are obviously good players and good students, and kids of high character...don't expect to see them bumping off the pizza delivery boy, etc.

We have mortgaged our present class of official markers, having only 4 slots remaining. Doc will have to work a recruiting miracle filling those 4 slots and landing some top-flight Futures. This year's recruiting may shape up to being Doc's most important in his 9 year tenure @ Marshall.

Definitely going to be interesting.

Actually, you can't have it both ways.

Wouldn't good coaching make any league actually better?
You sorta lost your own argument on the first line of what you said.

Yes I can.

“Better” compared to what? When CUSA is mentioned in the same sentence as a Power conference, you might have a point. Until then, CUSA will always be a stepping stone for good coaches to move on to bigger pay days and programs.

We recruit against USF for a lot of our recruits from FL because we are going after the same caliber and style of players.

Kiffin inherited a pretty talented team at FAU that has given us fits just about every year we played them. Partridge could really recruit but could coach. Kiffin has a good OC that got the most out of their offense, which was the teams biggest issue the last few years, as the defense has usually been pretty solid.
