Rent is $50/month it is going to go up to $150. If you bring home 500/month it comes out to about a third of your monthly income towards housing. Thats pretty much the standard by which most financial planners say should be spent towards housing.

No the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Having them pay $50/month isn’t sustainable. 1/3 of your income is what most in the personal finance world is about what you should pay/afford for housing.
