A sad, sad day.

And, one that could have been avoided had NASA listened to the recently departed John Young.

RIP to the Challenger 7.

The image about was taken by satellite image. I remember watching in school and it was very somber. Back then, the space program was part of our national identity and pride.
 
Watched an interesting documentary last night on the Discovery channel that said the thought is the astronauts survived the blast because their emergency oxygen masks had been activated and some had them on. NASA saying their deaths were caused by the G forces during the fall into the ocean and the impact. Hadn't heard that before. They also found some of them still strapped into their seats on the recovery dives. Very sad.

If you watch the video of the explosion closely you can see the crew portion of shuttle break away. Its been long speculated that some of them survived the initial explosion
