CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WCAV) On Monday night the Charlottesville City Council voted 3-2 to move the Robert E. Lee statue out of Lee Park, WCAV reports. Following that vote, council voted unanimously to rename Lee Park.

The chambers were split between people who wanted to keep the statue, and those who wanted it removed. Most of the public comments made at the beginning of the meeting were in favor of keeping the statue in Lee Park.

Mayor Mike Signer and Councilor Kathy Galvin were the two votes opposing the resolution. Before the vote, both said they were uncomfortable with the amount of money this would cost the city, and that the city could face a long legal battle for trying to remove the statue.

The meeting was heavily policed as more than four people were thrown out of council chambers by Charlottesville police officers for interrupting the meeting.

The city council will discuss at a later date how they financially plan to pay for the removal. The overall cost of the move will be around $300,000, which is less than 1 percent of their annual budget.

i just wish Libs would hurry up and get to removing any and all references to Adolf Hitler from the World. the sooner he is forgotten the sooner they will have to come up with a more appropriate comparison for any and all persons with a differing opinion.

i've started replying to all FB posts calling someone "Hitler" or "Hitler-like" or the new one "Hitlarian" with a simple picture

less graphic than many of the alternatives available but still drives home the point

I was not aware there were statues of Hitler all over Southern Germany.

I personally do not have a problem if some people want to worship dead American traitors. Granted, they are sort of romantic traitors. But I can see where it is offensive to black folks, as those traitors were fighting to keep them in slavery (let's not have that silly argument that it was over something else, because for God's sake the Confederate constitution explicitly protected slavery and the rights of slave owners). It probably is best to not have that stuff on public grounds in this day and age, unless it is made part of a display condemning slavery and treason.

Given how the left has taken to removing names from buildings, how Byrd's name hasn't been removed from anything is beyond me. I'm not necessarily endorsing the idea, but he filibustered the Civil Rights Act, was a Klan member, voted against Thurgood Marshall, & was openly dropping the term "ni**er" on tv just 15 years ago.

that's what you took from this?

In a famous letter to his wife, Lee wrote that "slavery as an institution, is a moral and political evil in any country."

Jefferson
Madison
Monroe
Jackson
Van Buren
Harrison
Tyler
Polk
Taylor
Johnson
Grant

You do understand the US military studies these Generals and their tactics.

Also, many military installations are named after Confederate Generals.

In 1975, Congress enacted a joint resolution reinstating Lee’s U.S. citizenship in what could be considered a final act to heal Civil War wounds. The resolution praised Lee’s character and his work to reunify the nation. It noted that six months after surrendering to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, Lee swore allegiance to the Constitution and to the Union.

“This entire nation has long recognized the outstanding virtues of courage, patriotism and selfless devotion to duty of General R.E. Lee,” the joint resolution stated.

There are 10 U.S. military bases that are named after Confederate figures:
  • Fort Lee
  • Fort Hood
  • Fort Benning
  • Fort Gordon
  • Fort Bragg
  • Fort Polk
  • Fort Pickett
  • Fort A.P. Hill
  • Fort Rucker
  • Camp Beuregard

I guess the Jefferson Memorial is next........If this is happening in Charlottesville, surely the statue of Jefferson at UVA has to come down.

I was thinking the same thing. Many of the same people that are upset about the removal of these statues are the same ones that believe America is going down the drain due to participant trophies.

More news to try to stir up another Civil War. It ain't worth it for this. Some guy that nobody still living ever knew. He didn't even win the war.

This isn't worth the time really. The NBA Black History Month shirts are a lot worse. Can't even watch a basketball game without political bullshit anymore. Even with all that, the shot LeBron made last night was one of the best I ever saw.

Well then he picked the wrong side. Tough shit. I am not a Confederate hater, and even own a "Rebel flag". There's a row of books on my bookshelf that are all on the Civil War. There are monuments to the CSA war dead I would fight tooth and nail to keep up; I was not shy speaking my mind when Louisville recently removed one of those. I support flying the CSA standard over CSA cemeteries. A lot of those poor bastards were fighting for a payday, one that often did not come, and then got their asses killed to boot. But it's long past time for sanctioned government reverence for traitors that led the fight for an evil cause. Move it to a Confederate cemetery.

So? We also study Rommel. Sure, he eventually wanted Hitler killed, but it's debatable if that was because of ideology or because he simply thought Hitler incompetent and leading Germany to failure. Anyway, winners and losers both have brilliant minds, of course we study them.

heard on the radio that Berea, KY will have the "Spoonbread Festival" this year. it was cancelled by the Mayor last year because Confederate flags are sold and they tried to stop it. the public outcry to keep selling them was too great to stop, so he just cancelled the thing...

SJW's and PC crowd are probably 60% of the reason why Trump is president.
