As NFL and college teams make changes to their coaching staffs, some former Herd coaches have been affected:

Buffalo Bills Head Coach Doug Marrone was allowed to opt out of his contract if there was an ownership change. There was and he did. Former Herd player and assistant coach Greg Adkins has been the tight end coach for the Bills since 2013 and has been coaching former Herd player Lee Smith.

Adkins had been the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for Marrone at Syracuse. Before that, Adkins had coached at Tennessee (OL, tight ends, recruiting coordinator), Troy (OL, recruiting coordinator), Georgia (OL, tight ends, DL) and Marshall (1991-1995 under Jim Donnan: DL, tight ends, OL). Adkins played 4 years at Marshall (1986-1989 under George Chaump) and was 2nd team All-Southern Conference in 1989. He's originally from Nitro. Marrone is reportedly being pursued by the New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears.

The Atlanta Falcons fired coach Mike Smith on Monday (12/29). The tight ends coach for the Falcons since 2008 was former Marshall assistant Chris Scelfo. Scelfo was at Marshall from 1990-1995 under Jim Donnan, serving as offensive line coach and offensive coordinator. Scelfo coached 3 years for Donnan at Georgia before being hired by Tulane. His record in 8 seasons was 37-57.Scelfo is credited with discovering Troy Brown and recruiting him to Marshall. Scelfo was at a junior college game to scout an offensive lineman when he noticed Brown playing for Lees-McRae Junior College.

When Gary Anderson left Wisconsin to become head coach at Oregon State, he took only 2 of his Badger assistants with him. This means running backs coach Thomas Brown is looking for a job, although he is one of several Wisconsin assistants who have expressed interest in joining new head coach Paul Chryst's staff. Brown was the running backs coach for the Herd during the 2013 season.

BTW - the running backs coach Anderson hired at Oregon State was Telly Lockette, South Florida's RB coach. Lockette was Miami Central's head coach from 2008-2012.
