college football fan map

That's probably fairly accurate. If you want a real laugh go look around Charlotte and try to find a zip code where the 49ers even show up.

Maybe just maybe because Marshall isn't trying to get hand that are more then 20 miles awa6from campus. Kidt a thought look no farther then Marshall's marketing department. Enough said.

It's tough being in the middle of an area where 3-4 large P5 schools are located. Fans drive hours to watch them play. UK, OSU, WVU, Va Tech are all successful in both major sports now. Add in the poor demographics economically and we face an uphill battle to build the fan base, especially when we aren't winning on a bigger scale.
The crew in Old Main and the Schewey need to push hard to everyone within a 2 hour radius of Huntington and try to lock in as many fans/students as they can get. That's probably a total population of 750K to 1 Mil people I would guess.

These maps have been around a long time, this one is from 2014. It is a version of what political scientists call “SLOP” Self-selected Listener Opinion Polls. Totally unscientific. It just takes a zip code block and colors it by whatever the most self-selected in that area “like”. No matter if that is 100000 people and no body likes anything else, or 20 people and 19 “like” something else, or, as in much of the northeast, 99.9% don’t “like” any team at all. It is garbage.

Can you imagine what Marshall’s struggle would be if, let’s say, WVU was located in Barboursville and Ohio State was located in Chesapeake. Talk about living with the enemy.

chappa heel - 5 minutes from Duke

Raleigh - 15 minutes from Duke
That was the point of my last post.

What if Eastern Mich wasn’t 5 minutes from Ann Arbor.

What if Marshall was in Grove City.

See, things aren’t really that bad.

Difference is that all three of those schools are in the same conference and it's a power conference. We have a ton of people that go to schools like Ohio and Marshall but attach their loyalties to power conference schools.

The point is that some Marshall fans cry “woe is us” about fans, media coverage, “we’re not big time, etc.
I used my example to say it could be much much worse and overall MU receives a lot of attention and support for a regionally based school.

That we do. Too bad our administration and AD don’t attempt to get more butts in seats, or seem to care.

It really does. Look at ECU. Probably #2 or #3 in their own city and county. Same with the Ohio schools.

Heck, go look at Clemson in SC(although I don't think their numbers are exactly correct).

According to this chart, my zip code in Charleston is 7% Marshall, and 6% Ohio State. There must be a lot of Ohio State fans in my neighborhood with Marshall flags in their front yards.
