Marshall's schedule analysis:

Marshall Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Best Case Scenario
10-2: The Herd at least split the home games against Pitt and Boise State early on, and they take down East Carolina and Ohio in the early road games for a big September. They survive the run of three road games in four October dates with at least two wins, and they roll through an easy November on the way to the Conference USA title game.

Marshall Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Worst Case Scenario
5-7: There’s a problem on the road. Marshall lose the opener against ECU to set a bad tone, it can’t get by Pitt or Boise State in Huntington, and it loses two of the three October road games. a November loss makes it a losing season.

5. Oct. 24 Florida Atlantic
6. Oct. 31 at FIU
7. Sept. 5 at East Carolina
8. Sept. 19 at Ohio

That analysis looks pretty close to me... This coming season is the first one in a long time where I feel like I am totally in the dark as to what the Herd is going to look like.

Best case scenario... Green improves, Knox has another stud year, we find two WRs that can make plays downfield and the defense comes together better than expected... MU wins 9-10 games, a division title and makes a CUSA championship appearance.

Worst case scenario... Green doesn't improve, Knox levels off, our WRs don't develop into downfield threats and the defense never figures out how to fill the holes it has... MU wins 4-5 games and Doc's hot seat is scorching by Thanksgiving.

With two very different scenarios equally possible, the smart money is to bet the mean... Marshall goes 7-5 and plays a MAC team in a mid-December bowl game. At the end of the year 20% of fans are irrationally ecstatic, 60% disappointed, and 20% irrationally irate.

Good analysis! The ECU game right off he bat will be telling, they improved as the season progressed and have a decent QB and certainly we've had our share of road woes.

Yep. They have the better offense and passing game. Both D's will be reloading. Our only hope is the running game is effective in shortening the contest by eating up clock and we do just enough to keep them from making big plays. I am impressed with their QB.

Just hoping Green will improve as an upperclassmen...the game will not be a day at the beach and a loss could send us spiraling down. We could certainly lose in Athens and BSU , Pitt would be seem a stretch if we can't clip the Pirates.

So its the Herd battling WKU and FAU to see who faces LA Tech or UAB In the CUSA championship game.

Agree the key to the season is how we start out. ECU has a quality HC, Houston, who won big at FCS James Madison. If he can get his players at ECU he have them competitive pretty soon. Don't know how their recruiting has gone this season and spring, with the pandemic imposed limitations. But hopefully with time to prepare for the opener the Herd should be competitive, and possibly win, down in Greeneville.

Just worry about the Herd defensively. Doc's recruiting in the D line and linebacker departments has fallen down lately, IMO. Don't see how we can compete with the likes of Pitt and Boise playing with 220-25 pound D ends and 250 pound D tackles. Perhaps Doc has a few studs redshirting or maybe a transfer or two that I haven't heard about.
