There are a lot of things, including in your life, that aren't "normal." It doesn't make them wrong just for not being normal.
That's the point of teaching acceptance of these things to children. Far too many children who are gay, feel more comfortable acting as the opposite sex, etc. have lost their lives due to them being ostracized for not being "normal."

Mutilating yourself is not normal and it is wrong. Not a reason to hate someone, but it is definitely wrong.
Normalizing things like this is wrong.
