As long as current economics are a thing, ESPN Events (which owns and runs most of the minor bowls) will make sure every bowl eligible team goes to a bowl. ESPN makes money off these things, and whether or not a league is in a relationship with ESPN for the regular season has nothing to do with it.

And, while I am at it, the bowl tie-ins for ALL FIVE of the G5 conferences are about the same. Lots of reasons to criticize this or that conference. But what bowl you end up in is not one of them, all have the same sort of list.

This is correct... Not to mention, because ESPN owns and operates most of the bowls, they can horse trade however they want in order to get the best TV matchups. Bowl tie-ins are mostly garbage at this point. ESPN is going to create matchups to drive interest and tv viewership.

The conference tie-ins just provide a guideline and give them an out when a league has teams eligible that no one wants to watch... "Well we had to stick Eastern Michigan and Charlotte in the Myrtle Beach Bowl (Bahamas Bowl, Birmingham Bowl, etc) because that was their tie-in." Thus eating the revenue loss on a game that maybe 500 people actually give a damn about.
