Custer’s class was intended to graduate in 1862 but the outbreak of the Civil War shortened his academy career to four years. Custer finished 34th of 34 graduates that year. 23 classmates dropped out for academic reasons and 22 left to join the Confederacy.
Although he finished last of his classmates that graduated that year, he ended the war as one of the most important and well known soldiers in the US Army.
