Dandy Dan Admits to Padding the Schedule

The sad thing about that philosophy other than everything is if like BB said we would lose one of those games what a serious psychological blow that would be!

Kids aren’t stupid they know when they are playing crap teams. I mean does anybody think our team has received any psychological lift from beating Norfolk and GW.

If we don’t go undefeated or close to it in in OPC in basketball it will do huge damage to the team in my opinion.

What a joke.

I think it is better than playing powerful teams on the road that you have no chance of winning just to make more money. Last years schedule for such a young team was very hard.

You think last year's schedule was very hard? Come on.

We should have at least one money game. Could you imagine if Huff made next year's schedule and it was and FCS team and then three bottom feeder G5s for the sole purpose of making a "winnable" schedule.

This isn't about the team "finding their mojo" and it darn sure doesn't prepare this team for conference play. This is Dan padding a schedule that will allow him to "show improvement" so he can continue being the head coach.

Last years team was very young and little depth because of it. Dan did pad the schedule some but playing those mid american conference teams is not an easy win and that should get them ready for conference play. I believe that conference usa is stronger in basketball than the sun belt conference.

So in essence, the season comes down to one week in March. That's terrible message to send recruits. Damn glad Grassie doesn't have this attitude, we'd have never won the National Championship.
Based on the current state of our sports teams, we should pay Grassie a "bonus" to host a coaches clinic during the summer next year and make it mandatory attendance for all MU coaches.

Making a basketball schedule that is among the weakest in the country is ridiculous. When you already play in a terrible basketball league (and don't kid yourself, the SBC is awful) you need to play 2-3 "good" teams in the nonconference... And don't give me that MAC garbage either. The MAC is a one bid league that's a half step above the SBC. Playing half of the shitty MAC teams in Ohio is based on convenience, not quality.

Yep. I know it's a long shot to ever get an at large bid, or NIT; but to readily admit it and schedule to reflect that thought just doesn't sit well with me. I can't imagine any recruit worth anything would consider playing here if he knew we don't expect, or try to make the post=season unless we win the league. Call me crazy.

No, they were not.

Kinsey was in essence a senior.

George was in his fifth season in the program. Beyers was in his fourth. Goran and Marko were in their third.

Andy Taylor had started 45 games coming in to the 2021-22 season.

Even OAK and Early played in all 22 games as true freshman in 2020-21.

Kinsey was injured much of the season. George and Beyers were not very good .Goran and Marko have not played to their full potential and the bench consisted of many freshmen having to play. This years team is a year older and the addition of another 3 point shooter and a non injured Kinsey should make Marshall much better this season but not great.

Maybe he can be our Cam Henderson and coach multiple sports.

We were not young... As Chris pointed out above.

Kinsey was injured, but not bad enough to miss games... And still led the team in minutes.

We just weren't very good. No reason to make excuses. We were poorly coached and lacked the overall talent to be competitive... Sometimes if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it's a duck.

And rather than get better, recruit better, and coach better, our administration decided that playing a WVIAC schedule to "create" more wins was the solution. Hooray! We are going to beat Queens College, Glenville State and Tennessee Tech!... I know I feel better.

This could backfire on old Danny. If he doesn't have a good season against this wet T.P. schedule he'll be even more exposed.

But, but, but, once, from 4th place, we got on a eight day hot streak, it might happen again some day.

You mean that isn’t the mantra anymore?

That we are finally demanding better?

That we understand that this conference, like the previous one, was built for football and the various other programs were brought along for the ride, all at very different levels of effort, ability, history and interest?

Gee, I wish I had said that.

Get serious about basketball. Fire DD, fire everyone in the building, run off as many of the players as will be run off, and grab this crap conference by the throat and dominate it.

I dont think it will backfire as they will be a much better team this year with a healthy Kinsey and all the better players a year older with the addition of the tranfer three point shooter will help also.

The sad thing is, there is no reason why we can't do what you propose... But we won't.

DD will go 22-10 against the worst schedule in Marshall basketball history and the folks in the Shewey will be falling all over themselves about what a "great" season we had. Culminating with a CIT/CBI appearance where we lose in the second round to directional Illinois or some SWAC team.

Totally correct. We simply do not demand anything from the basketball office. It looks like it is becoming clear the same is true about football. Just show up, give a good press conference, and that is all that is needed.

At least DD seems to actually like living in this area.

You mean like the FB team playing at Notre Dame?
Basketball has almost always proved different . I know all collegiate major sports has turned into nothing more than trying to make money. Big money wins in sports now and Marshall supporters probably will never spend what it takes to be with the elite again. I sure hope I am wrong.

You're right. Basketball is different. Upsets happen far more regularly in basketball then they do in football.

This schedule is a joke and you'd have to be a dannite cultist to defend it.

I believe he is a very good coach and you guys are sore losers after one bad season. Winning and money from supporters will bring in good recruits . Playing teams that are superior to you will only get less recruits and more sore losers like you.

1 bad season? A very good coach? Take away his worst season and his best season and what is left? Not one time has Dan had our team in position for the best regular season in the conference.

And you're darn right we're sore losers. We're tired of watching MBB do almost nothing while the HC barely puts forth an effort and blames everyone else for why he can't coach a consistent winner. I mean he literally blamed last year's struggles on not having a school president because the players didn't know what direction the school was going to go in. Give me a break.

If we used your logic then we should have never played Notre Dame this year in football because you know. They're a superior teams and playing them causes us to get less recruits. On the contrary. Playing bigger more recognizable teams attracts players to play at your school.

Three weeks have gone by since that win over Notre Dame and I have not seen one single player recruited for football in that time.

Padding the Schedule?? What? By our head Coach D'Antoni with the career MU winning percentage of 52-53% heading into year Nine?

Say it Ain't so, Dandy Dan! Say it Ain't so!!!!!!!!!!

I believe the better recruits want to play against the best competition they can. It makes them better and helps their case if they want to move on to tje NBA after school. I am sure Kinsey, Taylor and Co. would love to play against Duke, NC, UK and others for the opportunity to show their stuff and play in those arenas. If they don't want to play the best and be the best, I question their whole desire to play the game in the first place.

Agree, the players want to play against the best... Games at the blue blood schools mean a lot to the kids. Indiana, Kentucky, UNC, Duke, Kansas, etc... Even lesser, but still name opponents matter, Cincy, Xavier, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, etc.

Another thing that playing 1-2 big name teams does -- It gives your fan base something to look forward to. If Im walking in the door from work and making a decision about how to spend my 7-10 p.m. window of time, the thought of "Hey we are playing Indiana tonight" gets me a lot more excited than "Hey, I think we have Queens College on ESPN+++."

Seriously. What donyiu

Good to see sunshine and rainbows Stowers -- er, I mean Perkins, is back to help smooth over this asinine decision by the administration.

You can defend this crap all you want. It doesn't make it any better. DD said he dumbed down the schedule to get easy W's, in the newspaper, in front of God and everybody.

Its a chicken-shit move... No matter how you frame it – "Giving the team confidence" "Preparing for conference play" etc.

You really believe players couldn't play to their potential because we didn't have a school president? Or was it not having an AD. Or was it covid? Or is it charter flights? Or is it lack of a practice facility.

Then again you still believe Herrion got a raw deal from the fans too.
