Dandy Dan Admits to Padding the Schedule

Dan is fleecing the state and the donors of money while putting forth as little effort as possible to provide us with a quality product in return and superfans like Aaron could care less. They'll continue to honor them and white knight for them.

Dude. What I am saying is you, like many others, want stuff, then when you get it, it isnt good enough.

He told you why the schedule is not up to par. You dont believe him.
No I believe him. He made it easier so he could rack up wins. It's completely bogus. He watered it down so it's easier. Instead of recruiting better and coaching better he'd just rather make it easier so he csn continue to keep his job.

It's complete garbage. You can accept it if you want. Then again you just accept anything and everything Marshall does.

If you truely believe this schedule gets us ready for March then you're foolish.

"fleecing the state and the donors of money..."

Three weeks have gone by since that win over Notre Dame and I have not seen one single player recruited for football in that time.
Maybe the same potential recruits that saw the Notre Dame game also watched the Bowling Green and Troy games.

That is the difference between adult fandom and childish super-fandom. Predicting 15-0 in football, 50-0 scores, thinking beating Glenville State in basketball is anything but embarrassing for all involved, being proud of something like 22-7 and a pay to play in basketball against a schedule that no one cares about. Such childlike super-fandom doesn’t further anything. I can teach a three year old to say “Marshall” every time I ask who is going to win on Saturday.

Discussing the ins and outs of the programs, warts and all takes a lot more intellect. And it leads you to the inescapable concluding that we must fire DD, fire everyone in the building, and run off as many players as can be run off and then grab this HORRID basketball conference by the throat and dominate it.

The reality is that Dan is to the basketball program what Kayo was to the overall AD.

Both are old dudes, collecting a check, playing the retirement game, while enjoying the perks and notoriety of their positions and the people that hang off their jocks because of it.

Kayo spent almost everyday hanging out downtown and every afternoon drinking at Rivals sports bar. He, like Dan, “worked cheap” because they have other income sources, and give you less than what you pay for. Dan puts out the effort of about a triple A level HS coach, not the 80-90 hours a real Division 1 coach needs to be successful. He has signed maybe 10-12 legit D-1 basketball players in a decade, it’s been a joke.

I think it’s way worse, Aaron. He (and I have been a big DD fan since the 60’s) has reached the point where he’s so cocky about still getting paid (at 75 y.o.) that he thinks he can say what he wants, play who he wants and The Faithful will just continue to lap it up and turn out in numbers to see this trash schedule! We have a HC that:
Stays quiet too much during the game.
Doesn’t call time outs quick enough
Seems to get the most energized when he screws up his face, & stays after the refs until he gets teed up.
Old, tired staff. No energy on the sideline.
Time for a change!

Agree, the players want to play against the best... Games at the blue blood schools mean a lot to the kids. Indiana, Kentucky, UNC, Duke, Kansas, etc... Even lesser, but still name opponents matter, Cincy, Xavier, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, etc.

Another thing that playing 1-2 big name teams does -- It gives your fan base something to look forward to. If Im walking in the door from work and making a decision about how to spend my 7-10 p.m. window of time, the thought of "Hey we are playing Indiana tonight" gets me a lot more excited than "Hey, I think we have Queens College on ESPN+++."

DD needed to be gone several years ago.

I personally think with all that was going on in the athletic dept over the last year/half (new AD, new FB coach, baseball field fiasco) the university chose to put finding a new basketball coach on hold for a season and allow DD to go out gracefully without burning a bridge of a major Alum.

Agreed... It was easier to give him another year, draw up a schedule that guarantees a winning record, and let him "retire" after this season. If that was the thinking, I get it.

What I won't get, and what will make this board have a meltdown, is if we go 22-10 and then the news comes out that DD has signed a multi-year extension based on this year's record/schedule.

DD will be here as long as he is physically able and wants to be. All of the “there was too much to do, so they kept DD another year” is just wishful thinking. Any good AD has a short list of candidates for not just football and basketball, but all sports, in the back of his mind and can hire a coach in a few days. CS was informed that keeping DD was the price of getting this job.

We had such a clean break though. His contract had ran out. No buyouts. Nothing. We could have walked away with any reason. Instead he gets a "1 year deal" with rumors that these will be as long as he wants them.

I do believe Spears dropped the ball on this one. I don't care that he was new because new ADs come in all the time and bring in "their guys".

Good coaches and good programs use tournament appearnces to spring board into success. Dan got lazier and we've trended down since then.

He needs to go as does the entire staff.

And it wouldn't have been the first time nor would have been the last time that a new AD replaced current people with his people.

are you going to complain about fans not attending with that crappy schedule? Sounds like Dan will pad his win total while marshall suffers from lack of ticket sales.

except your basing that on comments from those that probably don't even have season tickets. the schedule is somewhat disappointing. but the rest is just meaningless whining and ticket sales will be in line with prior years.

Except this wasn't what our new AD's previous job experience had him in a position to do upon immediately accepting the position here. This was his focus at Pitt:

from the University of Pittsburgh, where as deputy athletic director and chief operating officer he manages all revenue generation and external operations, primarily focused on strategic partnerships to help reduce expenses and supplement revenue streams. His areas of responsibility at Pitt include marketing and branding, media relations, fundraising, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, game presentation, broadcast services and multimedia rights.

Spears is an accomplished leader with a proven track record of raising funds, forming corporate partnerships, and developing and executing strategic plans. In his five years at Pitt, he was instrumental in a capital campaign to support Pitt’s $250 million “Victory Heights” initiative to build and upgrade athletic facilities, helping to raise nearly $15 million of the $25 million goal to-date, as well as assisting with the development of the champions advisory board that has engaged 24 new alumni/donors with the goal of completing the campaign by 2024.

I cut it short, but you probably still wont get the point. He wasn't in the role of hiring and firing coaches upon immediately accepting a postion. He had other issues to clean up after arriving. My God, can you imagine the outrage of fans had a new AD hired a new coach in "just a few days".... Pffft

Simply, not true.

Bleeds33......please provide a short list (5) guys you "think" would be interested in uprooting his family, and moving to Huntington (????) where the FANS piss & gripe when the football temperature drops below 59 degrees. Interested in your answer.......

1. Fans piss and gripe at every school. It's what fans do.

2. Your argument is that we should keep Dan because you don't think I could name 5 guys that would move to Huntington? Who know s what coaches would and wouldn't come to Huntington. That's not justification for retaining a 70+ year old coach that can't win. Let's let the program continue to slide because you don't think there's anyone that would move to Huntington to be a head MBB coach.

Also please just stop with the "uprooting their family" crap. That's the nature of the job. Coaches change jobs every year for all different types of reasons.

There are 352 Division One basketball schools. That means there are 352 head coach jobs. And that includes the bus and gym leagues that are kidding themselves by being DI (Big South, Southland, the two HBCU leagues, America East, MAAC, Northeast, more). So the real number is more like 275.

MU is one of them. One of 275 jobs. But Huntington is soooooooooooooooo bad that nobody would want this job, so we should settle for a retired HS coach with a .500 record.

Please. If we had the courage to fire DD, there would be 100 applicants by 4 PM.

I still believe that if it was just some other coach and not Dan D'Antoni he'd already be gone. We didn't have any issues firing Herrion because we were afraid no one else would want to be here.

The biggest issue (and there's a lot) is the lack of effort in recruiting. You could also point your finger at many other things, but the lackluster effort put forth in recruiting is issue #1. But, I totally understand it. If I were a former high school basketball coach in my mid 70s, I would sit back in my recliner and smoke a pipe, and probably not tour the country in search of athletes either. Of course, I also wouldn't pretend to be a D1 college basketball coach as well. Coach Dan will be here as long as Coach Dan decides to be here. It's an unwritten lifetime contract. It is what it is, and Marshall is simply putting forth a token effort into their basketball program, which coincidentally, is exactly what a couple hundred of the other pretend to be D1 programs are doing.

Not too often a AD comes in and makes a coaching change two weeks on the job…

Now after a year or two, yes, very common for a new AD to make a change if things aren’t going well. Making the move to a 1 year contract is pretty bold, and not a big vote of confidence and makes it hard to recruit.

Personally I believe since new conference has been announced it’s been DD’s wish to give the Sun Belt one shot and by the schedule he’s put together he wants to get as many W’s as possible and then ride off into the sunset and hopes people won’t remember who he played.

Correct he's probably hoping they remember him taking us farther than anyone ever took us in a season

Connect the dots on DD.
The decision to retain him was likely made prior to Spears hiring and it was part of the deal when CS accepted employment as AD. DD staying on is about as political as it gets. Same for signing off on a puny schedule. Time will tell......though the trajectory of the BB program continues to decline.

So how long does he get to live off of that one season?
i guess it depends on this season. My guess is another year like last and he leaves on his own or the administration moves him on. I think he'll have success this year, likely contend for the SB title and will definitely finish in the top four pf league. I think we have best roster since 2018 this year so we will see. Those saying he's here as long as he wants are just silly foolish comments.

All I know is this: Just like any of you that witnessed the Herd smack ND in the mouth in front of 70k+ and TD Jesus, The Faithful that were in San Diego say it was the most excited they had ever been at a Herd bball game. So, time will tell…..
