East Carolina University has announced the cutting of both men and women’s swimming and diving teams and men and women’ tennis teams. All this due to financial difficulties. I’m sure Marshall is going to have to make similar cuts at some point.

I can't believe ECU charges their student body so much in athletics fees, and then fields Men's Diving and Men's Tennis, which just ups their Title IX requirement. Title IX-appeasing women's teams is the only reason Marshall has either of those programs.

I’m sure Marshall is going to have to make similar cuts at some point.

To play in Division I, a school must feature 16 sports and fund at least 90% of the scholarship maximums there in. ECU was sponsoring 19 sports. MU is already at the minimum of 16 and cannot drop any sports. A request to waive these requirements by the Group of 5 was denied last month.

Schools that are over the limit or which have recently moved conferences and find themselves in leagues that don't have that sport, are using current events to get even.

Not trying to be a wise guy here. It may well be that many of these sports will end up being club sports with some form of competition. They play hockey like this. Ohio University has long fielded a solid "club' hockey team and folks support them. Not saying this is the best way to go , only saying it may be the solution for some sports.
