Yes, the most environmentally sound thing you can do today is buy an old beater and drive it into the ground.
But also the most environmentally sound new car that can be manufactured, over the life of the car, is electric.
The article is pretty fair, but it’s still falling into the trap of comparing BEVs against some hypothetical perfect car and not what they’re actually replacing.

The issue when saying “over the life of the car” is meaningless. You are spiking carbon output to build them so we will all be dead before the useful life is consumed. We only have 7.5 years left according to AOC.
