I have been going to Marshall football for years in the heat, rain and cold. I think we have the worst fans in America when it comes to attending a game when there is a little bad weather. What we have is a bunch of damn wimps that find any excuse they can not to go to a game. We can't have 75 and sunny every game. So to those that stayed at home. Man up and grow a set! Put your ass in the stadium and support the Herd!

Here we go.....I'm a better fan than you, no your not, yes I am. (Chest pounding heard in the background)

Having missed only 1 1/2 games since the stadium opened, I say "Yeah me, my wife and group that attend all games." and we are all over 72 years old. So there !

Sometimes peace in the family wins out over fans in the stands.

Hey Cocky, just noticed that we both joined HN on 08/14/2002. I wonder if that was the 1st day you could be a part of this board? Otherwise, a coincidence for sure....

pointless thread. If & when we consistently field a top 20 team in the national polls, then this becomes a valid discussion.

Go HERD !!!

Therein lies the problem. Herd fans tend to want to see results before they support. We can't call ourselves a big time program and never will be if people skip out because of some rain. It's pathetic. We just don't have the loyalty that big programs have and never will. We have fair weather fans. This area doesn't appreciate Marshall football. Plain and simple.

I agree with everything you say here. Our fans as a whole are terrible. I heard do many excuses leading up to the game. Usually related to weather. Yet I see people in their 80s at games no matter what. They realize what Marshall means to the community.

Herdon2 - In saying "pointless thread", I was referring to the decades old pattern of fan attendance @ Herd football games. Even going back to the '98 & '99 seasons, when we lost 1 game in 2 seasons, this was a problem.
It is going to continue to be a problem with no easy solution. The challenge is to make Marshall football THE activity that families/fans/students live for during the months of Sept-Dec. It also takes top-shelf opponents coming to the Joan to bring that last 10-12,000 fans out on game day. And yes, the weather certainly affects a lot of our older fans' decision to stay home & listen to/watch on TV. For every 80 y.o. couple that you refer to that comes out in the worst weather, there are 100 couples that will choose to stay home. Just how it is.....

Speaking of it being THE event.... this weekend was multiple homecoming dances for hs kids and their parents and they also had the pumpkin festival going on in milton. So i can see where some people may have other things going on when we are playing in cold rain against an Old Dominion team that got beat by 49 the week before. I drove in to huntington and went to the game but i couldn't fault anyone if they had other stuff going on or didnt want to sit in the rain.

I am a fan of The Herd, so thanks for calling me the worst even though you do not know me.

So we must be averaging the lowest in all of America to be the worst, i did not realize all of the MAC, Sunbelt and most of CUSA, MWC and the AAC had all improved the size of their attendance to make us the worst in America now.

None of the above excuses hold weight with bigger programs including WVU. People drive from here and all over the state to support them no matter the weather. They drive hours every Saturday to support their team. And a fair number of those fans didn't even attend the school. It's about loyalty

I wouldn't call us the worst in America but I would lump us in with most smaller schools that don't show up on a regular basis to support their team.

It's sad really considering what this program has been through over the years. It's like people have forgotten that we came close not having a program to cheer for. I don't ever see it changing unfortunately.

Minus one big game on occasion our attendance has seemed to sag over the last 2 years which is weird considering how well we have done. Without the Purdue game we are averaging well below 20,000 for this season. That's got to be one of the lowest attendance averages we have had for quite some time. I mean last home game was beautiful and no one showed up.

What fan base in America doesn't want to see results before they support? Not too many people going to watch losing teams. And I know this will come as a shock, but we are not one of the "big programs" and never will be. It's raining, a lot of out of town fans couldn't make it in, it was somewhat cold, we were playing one of the worst teams in the country a team that just got shut out by Appy state 49-0! There isn't a program in our conference, heck in the group of 5, that would draw 25k plus for that game! I really don't feel like I missed much yesterday.

the problem a lot of you have is worrying about how others see us...

Tulane
Tulsa
SMU
Houston
Memphis

our crowd yesterday would have been typical on a nice day for any of the teams listed above over the last 5 years......

I am less bothered by the fact that 20,000 people stayed home yesterday than I am by the fact that 13,000 random people who haven't been to a Marshall game in the last decade showed up for Purdue.

We can't sell out for VT, we can't sell out for Cincinnati, we sell so few seats to WVU that their fans can easily buy up a quarter of our stadium, but a shitty team from a big conference comes to town and boom everybody in Huntington's bleeding green? I'm sure seeing MARSHALL -6 on the line had nothing to do with it.

Sorry but my house being partially underwater here in NC kinda won out... I will be there next Friday.

Obviously there are some valid reasons for missing, but we all know most people were just scared of a little water.

I really don't know. Come to think of it, I had no idea how long I'd been on here. lol.

Cant have top 20 team every year--thus Fair weather fan or bandwagon fan--need to support win or lose--rain or shine!

Did any of you watch the MSU - Purdue game? Tons of empty seats in a drizzle for the #2 team at home. Charlotte may have had 5K in their place for Temple, in the rain.

I love to see the elementary kids get on the computer and start the - Our fans suck, diatribes.

My family wasn't there. Our youngest daughter had homecoming. We were carting she and her friends to pictures, dinner and the dance. Guess I am a bad fan.

Bad weather, game on tv, 4-5 local HS homecomings - with many families doing what we did.

Maybe one of these days, you guys might understand kids are more important than any event going on. Until then, shut up.

I get the family stuff but not everyone that didn't show up had kids and homecoming. Most of the ones I talked to said they just weren't sitting in the rain. Hence the fair weather label....literally. Our program will never be even close to a big program even if we were to land in the Big 10 or ACC one day. But we live in the same state as WVU and the fans come from all over the state no matter the weather unless they are losing and it is a night game in the cold. Then they will would still sell out our stadium with the amount of fans they have there. There is a difference in loyalty to teams like WVU and the like compared to us.

our avg attendance last year was higher than 2 ACC schools. we also rated #23 in the nation for increase in attendance over the previous year...

but yea, our fans are da wurst.................

Agreed Andy - Besides coming on this board to complain about the lack of attendance is kindof like
preaching 2nd amendment rights to the NRA.....

Go HERD !!!

Winning cures all! It's all about the culture. andy makes a great point out attendance has gone up even as we see college and most professional sports attendance declined as TV home experience has become better. However the culture of winning will bring back fans as great memories are formed .
Remember last years cusa championship in the rain and wind and we still didn't have anything close to a sell out. But I remember having fun shivering in a van bringing beer with great friends. Enjoy and spread the word and the culture will build on itself.

Christ folks, we didn't sell out for a championship game in Huntington under similar conditions. Why the hell would people show up to watch Marshall face a team that got steamrolled 49-0 by a division 2 team. There are times when this argument has been valid, but there were a lot of reasons for the attendance being as low as it was. Plus, let's be realistic, outside of the Tri-State no-one really gives a shit about us...We have WVU, Ohio State, Ohio U, Kentucky, Louisville, and VT all within a 4 hour drive of Huntington.

Realistically we should be happy to get the attendance that we do.

Marshall did a pretty good job with marketing Purdue as being Big 10. That allowed for the influx of attendance.

That being said, how many people give a damn about ODU to sit in the rain to watch a team that looks like a JV squad face a Marshall team that, quite frankly, is not very good? It's just reality.

It's seems like every year we have this "discussion" on this board. So get used to it, or don't read this type thread.
