Fair weather fans....

Threads about - attendance, how our fans suck, and playing WVU. Gotta love Herdnation.

our avg attendance last year was higher than 2 ACC schools. we also rated #23 in the nation for increase in attendance over the previous year...

but yea, our fans are da wurst.................

AAC isn't exactly a measuring stick for the world. Our attendance generally sucks, so it doesn't shock me if there's a huge increase during a 13-1 season. We've proven we CAN get a decent amount. We just don't consistently do it because fans can't stand anything below perfectly sunny and 75 degrees.

re-read what you quoted. there is a big difference between ACC and AAC... we were ahead of several AAC schools as well...

Oops! Misread the initial post. My bad. That isn't too bad then. What two are we ahead of in the ACC?

Duke (27,291)
Wake (27,210)
Marshall (27,461)

we were within 2k of a few other P5 schools and within 5k of even more...

I wouldn't call us the worst in America but I would lump us in with most smaller schools that don't show up on a regular basis to support their team.

It's sad really considering what this program has been through over the years. It's like people have forgotten that we came close not having a program to cheer for. I don't ever see it changing unfortunately.

You can't be serious? A boat load of schools would love to have our support. We'll likely lead CUSA in attendance or be close, which will top any MAC and SB school. Without looking our average attendance would likely be in the middle of the pack in AAC and MWC. We are likely close to a few P5 programs as well.
You guys go ahead and keep singing the doomsday song.

It's the same thing from the same people.

Remember that Herdon was the guy pissed at Marshall because they didn't let him know practice was moved so staff could attend Phil Ratliff's funeral.

I've been reading this board for quite some time but never felt the need to post but this thread bothered me again this year much like the one in previous years did so I decided to sign up and explain why. With all of the complaining about attendance and lack of loyalty to the Herd, I wonder if these same people attended the Women's Soccer game vs. Rice last week. Also, will these same people be in the Cam when the Herd takes on Newberry 11/15/2015. Not sitting through the rain during a game doesn't make me any less of a fan than those that did. I made the decision to stay home and watch the game on TV. I had 8 other Herd fans gathered in my living room and we cheered on the Herd the same as all of the fans there did. We had a great time doing it. My season tickets went unused that day and they may go unused tomorrow. But I'm still a fan!

Now let the blast the new guy posts begin!

Problem is, the people that complain probably don't have season tix, give to the BG or donated to the Vision Campaign. I just laugh.

Not dead thread just waiting to hear excuses on Saturday morning why the fair weather fans disappeared.

I'm certainly not going to "blast" you. We need all the fans we can get...so called fair weather or otherwise. My concern with not attending has little to do with whether you're a good fan or not. That's for others to judge. My concern is the effect it has on the kids who play. I probably would have had more fun at home and dry last Saturday. It was wet and miserable. But the reason I sat in the rain is that as a fan, the ONLY thing I can contribute besides money is support for these kids. Quite frankly, I'll bet when the kids ran out and saw the dismal crowd they were somewhat let down. By attending and cheering I can personally and actively participate in the morale of the players.

I certainly wouldn't criticize anyone who views it differently, and I'm certainly not criticizing you. Just from a personal perspective I think the kids deserve people to validate their hard work. It's about our personal enjoyment, but it's about them also. I go because I believe my presence is as important to the program as my personal comfort and enjoyment.

I agree about supporting the kids. We need to - no question. But I can only speak as to my experience as an athlete. When I was on the field, I couldn't tell if there was one person in the stands or 100,000. As an athlete should be focused on the task at hand. If you let the crowd size determine how you play, too high or too low; you're screwed from the get go. jmo.

Either way, this Friday night nobody locally doesn't have an excuse to be in that stadium, All the local HS games have been moved to Saturday. No Church, No youth sports, no homecoming, and it seems like No Rain.

I've driven 9 hours from Atlanta and will sit in ice rain and snow. I'll be there tomorrow, rain or shine and primed and loud. If it's poor attendance due to rain, we need to make up for it, and be loud and proud! Show this team we appreciate them!!!! Be Loud!!!

BTW Atlanta has the worst fair weather fans in America. It's why we build domes in the southeast, we won't come at the threat of rain. Green Bay has the best.

Marshall fans need to follow the packer fans role, ice snow rain you show.

Still I bet we draw 25K and they will be loud. Maybe 28. You watch.....

We should have 30,000+ at every game no matter who,we play or the weather condition. I get tired of hearing the same excuses. It's going to rain, we aren't playing anyone, it cost to much etc. GO HERD!

Except the MSA is more like 250,000 population and it sits right next to the charleston MSA with another 250,000. As I skn the pavers for the vision I see tons of outside huntington support. Our fan base and support isn't just huntington so the cities population is irrelevant unless you are an idiot

Welcome BWineman! Red or White? Have you seen the movie "BottleShock" ?? Excellent watch...
As for your commentary I live in Winston & don't come in for many games, so I guess I am being culled out with all of the other "bad" fans. But like you I watch every time I can, and I live & die (it seems) on every snap!! No other thing in my life right now makes my stomach flip like it did on 4th and goal in the 1st OT @ Kent....
Go HERD!!!!

must be why i listed several other things besides population... and if you are gonna play the "MSA" card Boise jumps to 616,561....

Want to know the best way to isolate and deter a fringe fan base?

Call them bad fans... Saying there is "no excuse"... Tout the terrible numbers from previous games.

No one feels obligated to go, coach's aren't going to make fans run laps for not showing up... no excuse is a terrible way to light a fire under people and it looks desperate... especially for people who really do have an excuse.

The whole 18k is embarrassing diatribe they've been plastering everywhere this week is also terrible, it shows disinterest. FORGET THE ODU GAME, it's over. It was a crappy September day, but the more you talk about no one showing up to games, the less people will feel inclined to show up.

But go ahead, pound your chests about how you show up an hour before kickoff and don't leave until the CSC workers kick you out. Everyone else is just trying to have a good time.

It is relevant. Charleston is and always has been WVU stronghold. Any idiot knows that. Well bring your buds down from Charley West. Or are they heading to the Hole tonight?

You are an idiot and it's hilarious your misunderstanding of where support comes from for MU. Fools like you think it's all in the city limits of huntington

dude, put the Khat down and chill... nobody anywhere in this thread said the only support for MU comes from Huntington...

Here's some facts for you.......

We are in the Top 20% in Home Attendance among G-5 schools.

In 2014 with some pretty lousy weather we out averaged:

Temple, Tulane, Ohio, Duke, Wake, Colorado St., Hawaii, and SMU just to name a few.......We equaled UConn and drew only 1000 less per game than Cincinnati & Houston.

We were 23rd in the country in average attendance increase over 2013.

For those that wish for the old FCS days......We out-drew every FCS school. Montana and JMU top the list.

We are who we are........We just raised 42 million dollars and opened an indoor facility that would be the envy of many. We've done some pretty amazing things even while our overall student enrollment has remained stagnant.

I'm not saying we should be satisfied but we also need to appreciate what we have.

Go Herd.....Keep growing!!!

And a booming economy in Boise.

I was mentioning on another board that I really never fully understood just how bad the economy of Huntington and WV is until I moved away. It is a train wreck.

I moved back to the Louisville area in 2010 after 23 years years in WV (well, one in W Kentucky, which is also a shithole). It is just an amazing difference.

And to compare to Boise...tech jobs are huge in Boise. Microsoft, HP and lots of other companies have major operations there. Lots of tech start-ups, too. It is just a different world there.

Frankly, I am amazed at what Marshall has done, for what this school is and where it is.

You don't have to be or call yourself a "super fan" to just show up to the damn game. It's not that hard to do. Yet we can barely average 25-28k.. even coming off a 13-1 season. Sad.

I want to know something from the ones that complain so much. Why is it sad, who decides how much we should average? Are you the one? When would it be enough? This all started with a thread stating we are the worse fan base in America. I can see wanting improvement, never being satisified and looking to get better.

But that is different that the worst in America, or our fans suck, or we are sad. When you compare us to our peers we do very well.

The second thing I want to know is when you say our fans suck, who is it that sucks and why? We have a core group of fans that will show up rain or shine, we have a larger group that show up when the weather is good and then we have more that will show up if they deem the entertainment value to be enough to make it worth their while. But why do any of those groups owe it to you, Marshall or anyone else to show up to a game. If I am a big hardcore soccer fan, would I be right to say everyone who doesn't show up to see the Marshall team and support them suck?

Would I like to see bigger crowds? absolutely. I go to almost every home game and some away games and I am the type that shows up early and stays until the clock reads 0:00, but I do that because I want to, not because some guy on Herd Nation says I should, or because I feel obligated to.

Sorry for the long rant, but I just don't get putting people down for not doing something they have no obligation to do. The only real way to get more people is to somehow get more people to want to go, you will never shame people into becoming a bigger fan.

Go herd

It's about supporting your team. To make the decision to stay home and watch on TV when you live in the area because it was a little uncomfortable weather wise makes no sense to me.

We always want to be a big time program but big time programs don't have a large portion of their fan base stay home because of some rain. It just doesn't happen.
