This Saturday, August 7 at 5:30 P.M. at the stadium. Wonder if our players under the new NCAA NIL (Name/Image/Likeness) are going to charge for photos/autographs/etc?

The event usually lasts about an hour. What often makes a big difference is if team photos are included in that hour, which sometimes happens. That shortens the autograph period down to 20-30 minutes.

If Marshall players charged for autographs, I think most people would just stop asking for them. As far as I can tell, Marshall has had maybe 5-6 significant NFL players in the last 30 years, whose autograph would matter to those outside the Herd fanbase. We've had maybe another 20 who had good enough careers that MU fans would pay for their autograph in arrears. That's out of probably 1,000 total players who came through the program over that period.

I have tons of autographed Marshall stuff, none of which I have any interest in selling, and a lot of the time I just give them away to other fans. To me, the autograph was just about that personal connection with the player, a reminder that I had met them, that increased my level of engagement throughout the season that followed.

If you want to charge for it, don't worry - you can keep your signature, and I'll just put this autographed Jacob Laudenslayer gameball on my desk at work instead. Or maybe I'll spend my falls fishing and camping instead. I don't know. This shhh is getting so ffffing weird.

Well stated. The problem with the NIL as I see it every athlete regardless of sport and ability can now ask for a fee. Where did amateur athletics go?

Gates open at 5.

I expect that most players will still sign autographs for those who want them, with the possible exception of 1 or 2. Even pro athletes will quite often autograph things without charging for it and I think most of the players know enough to know that their signatures are not worth anything monetarily. Plus, I think that a lot of them enjoy signing things for the kids especially, or a female (cute ones in particular).

The biggest changer from years past will be that they are supposedly not allowing pictures with athletes due to COVID protocols, but that has nothing to do with NIL. BTW, I'm as much of an NIL skeptic as just about anyone, but I think it's premature to assume that it will have a noticeable effect on Fan Day.
