Grant Wells Appreciation thread

So the defense quitting had no part in the adjustments working? Trust me, I am a huge critic of our defensive backfield and linebackers - they have been exposed in virtually every game, but the first half was the absolute best we have looked all year (honeslty a year and a half) in pass protection. We had given WKU the ball at the 50 like 3 times in the first half and they had 6 points. I would say chances are we would have been able to run the ball with Ali which would have kept the defense honest, and if we were ahead (which i believe we would be been) the need for Wells to be throwing the ball (and more importantly, the need for our greasy-finger receivers to actually catch the ball) out of desperation to score would have been diminished. Both of us are speculating here, and like 1988 says, if nothing else you are consistent with the shade throwing toward Wells, even when he is on the sidelines injured...

Your spitting opinion, I’m spitting facts. As hard as it is for you to swallow this, the FACT is our defense game up 47 points in a half, FACT is in 4 losses where Wells finished the game 50% of the time he ended the game with an INT. You can convince yourself that Wells leaving had everything to do with this loss, but the FACT is the defense still gave up 47 points in 2 quarters. Wells had a total of 77 yards before he went out. Stop acting like he was dominating prior to that injury we had the game in hand already. The defense didn’t quit, they were exposed like normal. It took WKU a little longer to figure that out

I'm not "acting" like anything. FACT: Wells was completing 71.4% of his passes (would have been higher if Gammage hadn't dropped 2). FACT: We were running a very balanced offense that WKU was having difficulty controlling. Fact: We were up 14-6 and our defense was playing pretty well - WKU had less than 150 total yards at half and had a huge advantage in starting field position (which usually translates into points) but we had held them to 3 FG attempts of which only 2 were made. Fact: Post injury, after two series of watching the offense gain approx 4 yards total, anyone that was actually at the game could tell that the life from both sides of the ball was gone. The offense was obviously one demensional and WKU stacked the box to stop it. Again, anyone that was at the game would have seen the DLine on the sidelines screaming at the Secondary group for being completely out of position and quiting on plays - multiple players needing to be separated. The defense quit whether you want to admit it or not. There was very little chance that our offense would score much due to a severe lack of talent at the QB position. I'm not excusing that fact that the defense got blown out (as mentioned before, the secondary and LB's are not good) in the second half, but I firmly believe that had the offense continued to resemble a team with a pulse, the game would have ended differently - yes that is my opinion. Just as it is your opinion that we would be losing the game and Wells would have thrown an interception to end the game, see how that works? I don't care if we agree or not, but the FACT that you were calling for a QB change weeks ago and questioning whether the coaching staff was making the right decision in keeping Wells as the starter clearly shows that your opinion on Wells vs Zban was way off base. I don't think many have hope that Wells ends up being a superstar, but he is clearly the best we have by a fairly large margin, and that's a fact.

I’m not reading your entire encyclopedia, all I got out of this was “10/14” but was for 76 yards. Also, wells is the best we have, which is unfortunate

Your loss. You have to acknowledge that Wells can only throw the ball to the routes that are called and to the receiver that manages to get open. On saturday that translated to 10 catches for 74 yards, that should not be a knock against Wells, the scheme maybe, but not Wells. And I totally agree with you that it is unfortunate that all we have is a servicable QB with zero depth, but that is for another thread. A thread where Sam will tell us we are focusing on history....

Not really fair to put a pick 6 and an onside kick return for a TD on the defense, is it?

Honest question: Did you watch the game? Your takes on it reek of someone who did not and simply read a box score.

Yes, unfortunately I did. At Bunkers in Glade Springs, want to see my bar tab as well? I watched WKU score every time they touched the ball from 14-6 on.
