..Recruiting better than us? That should never happen with our history compared to theirs. They came from the freaking Sunbelt and Doc is supposed to be a recruiting guru in FL yet WKU has obviously better talent at WR than we do. What gives? A 2nd year team from the Sunbelt should never be able to come in and beat us 2 years in a row.

Their facilities don't come close to what we have and they don't have a smell of our tradition or winning history. Doc is getting out coaches and out done by WKU and they have only been in the conference 2 years.

"Hey recruit, would you rather play Kent state and Ohio or LSU and Vanderbilt? And by the way we beat Marshall two years in a row." Recruit, "where do I sign."?

Bobby Petrino was there for a season. He may be a scum bag but he does know how to recruit. Those guys would be sophomores and juniors now. Brohm seems to be a good recruiter as well.

Add to that Legg would be outcoached by a soggy paper bag.

Maybe we aren't getting out recruited.. Maybe they know how to take the talent they get and coach it up and make it better.. While we struggle to get through to our talent enough to even keep their heads on straight so they can stay here

I think we've dismissed the highest rated recruits we've signed over the past 4 years. Grooms, both AJL's come to mind.

How is WKU out recruiting us?... the answer is, they aren't.

Every impact player on their team this year is a senior including a 6 year senior qb.
.

This. At our level, you can "recruit big", meaning you have a huge class or two and do well, and then crash. This is WKU (UCF, Memphis, so on) or you can "recruit even", meaning you have solid players in every class and never have that really bad year.

The trick for "recruit even" programs is to figure out how to beat whatever team is peaking each year. The trick for "recruit big" programs is to avoid fanlessness when you go 3-9 the next year.

here is some food for thought, how much longer will Brohm stay there? How much better are they gonna be without Doughty? I think next year will be a better gauge of what is going on, Litton will have a year under his belt and it wouldn't be a surprise to me if Brohm gets offered a better coaching job on the offseason, if he is this legit as a coach.

Rule #1, never underestimate your opponent. We did this against Ohio and perhaps even again against MTSU. I don't think we underestimated WKU but our plan was awful. No team can rely on their secondary to beat WKU. We also can't be asleep on watch on offense and run ho-hum stuff and expect to win against better than average competition. We didn't lose to WKU because they've outrecruited us or have a better program. We lost because our coaches didn't put together an aggressive game plan. LSU and Vandy got pressure on their QB. We didn't and I think didn't put enough emphasis on it. In Doc's words, we wanted to "not give up big plays and play good in the red zone." This game was over before it started.

I think Legg is a below average coordinator with no imagination. We used one trick play this year and we did it twice in one game. Not saying you should use trick plays all the time but occasionally pull one out and see if it works. Just do something different when the other stuff isn't working! ! When Legg has talent, he looks like a good coordinator. When we lack talent he looks terrible. Even with talent sometimes I wonder what he was thinking on some of his play calls.

Doughty is the real deal. It makes all the difference in the world having a superstar QB behind the center running the show.

Our defense kept us in the game for awhile, but our offense was just abysmal. It was due to a multitude of reasons, but it did start with a lame offensive game plan. Add to that a rookie QB who isn't able to improvise like Cato did and you get Legg's ineptitude exposed. Legg is a bush league offensive coordinator and an even shittier QB coach.

There is zero complexity to our offense and no it isn't because our freshman QB just is incapable of learning new plays. Our offensive plays rarely, if ever, involve blocking by our offensive players to set up the plays and extend them. Damn, it's just pi$$ing me off again just thinking about it.

As long as they keep their HC they will have good qb's. That whole family was full of them.

we had 2 weeks to prepare for these guys while they had less than a week for us. 6th year QB's and seniors will take you far, but at some point you have to admit our coaches don't do well when we can't "out talent" the team lining up against us...

If it were only about budget Texas would win the national championship every year.

WKU will be solid again net year with 7 starters on offense back and a transfer QB supposedly in the wings. Their D takes a big hit.
Glad we have them at home in 2016.

But, yeah our recruiting seems lax as of late.

We rely too much on props to make an impact before they even step foot on the field. If they ever get there.

WKU caught a little lightning in a bottle with their qb and getting a 6th year when the team brought a lot of senior players back. But don't forget....we did win the conference last year even with a loss to them. So we were good enough to win the conference and they weren't. So can you argue they had better players last year? I'll take the conference championship over a spoiler victory any day.

This year they have better players and it showed, but let's see if they can keep it up after heavy losses. My inclination is they will be trying to get back to our standards for a few years. I'm more worried about Middle Tennessee and that qb of theirs. That kid is good.

I highly doubt they're recruiting better than us.. Just because they have one really good year right after us isn't an indication of that. A lot of things work in a cyclical fashion, and they were just in a position to be a really, really good team when we had a down-ish year. Additionally, they have a QB who's been around D-I football and the program for six years, that's a massive advantage and will make everyone on the team perform better.

Furthermore not every high school kid or JUCO or transfer necessarily wants to come to Huntington, West Virginia and play for Marshall University.

The recruitment process is very long and emotional. You just never know who we may land via transfer, JUCO, or flip. Be patient and relax Herdnation.

I hate these pretentious douche bags always downing WV football.. Plenty of quality coaches in the college game come from WV and learned the fundamentals and the foundations of their coaching philosophy in the "craptastic" WV youth and high school leagues that they grew up playing in.. WV has a population of barely over a million people.. Of course our state isn't going to produce the amount of D1 athletes that states like Florida, Texas and Ohio put out.. All states who have multiple cities with more people than our entire state.. But, per capita WV holds up pretty well.. Heck arguably our best player on the team this year was a WV kid.. Switzer is down at UNC was a major playmaker for a Tar Heels team that is going to the ACC championship.. We are a small state so obviously the number of those caliber athletes we turn out is going to be small as well.. However, per capita we do alright and as far as turning out coaches we are way ahead of other states per capita

do we? who has the state turned out recently? jimbo is 50, saban is 64 (wow), rich is 52, etc.

Tndal, Dillon an G Thompson three starter NQs at got here and helped a lot for 2-3 yrs. N Harris who also played in the middle prob a starter next yr and McManus also. You don't know what yu' talking about obviously.

For what it's worth, although smaller, WKU's football stadium was MUCH nicer than ours in my opinion. Both the layout and the look were great.

Loved the layout....needs more restrooms and concession booths though. I thought the stadium was great though.

How many have we recruited and they haven't played one game for MU or stayed one year and got out of dodge. Unlike fans, I hope the coaches don't count on these kids until the whistle blows.

By and large not very many lately. Idont worry about who doesn't show up just the ones that do. But we sign fully qualified people too who don't show up or get in trouble or never stand out. Lots of people griping about Tindal but we have three or more DBs that got here either same time or before that cant take his job. That means he the best we could sign at the time. We couldn't sign him in the AAC so it would be Johnson or Wilson vs the Cincy passing attack ...just one ex. Be careful what you wish for.

True, but I can see why some people are concerned since our new conference rival just stole a kid from our own backyard out from under our nose.

I'll say this for WKU, they are doing everything in their power to create a rivalry with us. It may be one-sided, but we can't ignore it now. We need to man up and fight back.

I have only this thought about recruiting. Doc was to be a great recruiter, we won a conference crown, we have greatly improved our facilities and the best fan support in the conference I think, so people see you play if you are a player, we have a great history now and a great story. This was all suppose to add up to better and better classes. Where are they? we should see better players that are not NQs. I am not seeing the improvement. WHY?? Western Michigan looks to have a super class coming up and what is in Kalamazoo that Huntington can't offer to a player. it looks like Doc is not the recruiter that he was and is loosing battles for players to FAU, WKU and others. WHY? I like Doc and back him but we better realize that other teams are getting better players and if the game is "personal" based we are in for difficulty in the years ahead unless things change. MPO.

cool story, bro.

Trebel "per capita" compared to what? I guess you should be happy with our 0-4 (soon to be 0-5) men's basketball team since players from WV dominate the roster. Should tell you something and don't forget Dantoni has the 2015 WV Player of the Year who doesn't even get to play. Yeah "per capita."

This should be the next big project for the Vision Campaign......The Joan needs a MAJOR renovation.

eh, we need a baseball field and the cam needs a major renovation before and MAJOR work is done on the joan.

I won't argue the baseball stadium.......But it's not happening without city/county assistance. Or better yet, somebody needs to hit up the past and current Herd MLB players.

The Cam is also well down the list......It's adequate for now. We do however need a renovation to Guillickson in order to have a respectable bball practice facility.

The concourses, bathrooms, and exterior all need major work at the Joan, yesterday.

WKU does have nice facilities and a nice stadium, but it's trade off is 22,000 seats. It was also (probably) not looking too sharp before it's 2008 facelift.

Marshall fans, we don't have the budget do everything that you want whenever you want it. Yes, we need to work on the Joan. Do we have the money for it? Probably not. Keep coming to games and supporting Marshall athletics and everything will be taken care of.

As far as Baker leaving.. He was a two-start recruit, who very realistically would probably live in the shadow of the three young (and good) running backs we already have on the team.
