It's nauseating.

The logo M with "THE HERD" on it has become far too common on everything. It's a slang term used to describe the Marshall University Thundering Herd yet it's pasted on everything now. It's literally overtaken like mold on a piece of bread. I say The Herd as much as the next Marshall fan/alum but come on seriously. Should a slang term should be the face of the university?

Edit - THIS IS NOT ABOUT SPEAKING THE TERM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's about the LOGO.

I actually think we should drop the back box across the middle of the M and just go now with the kelly green M. Just like today at a Starbucks I saw guy w a dark blue jacket and an orange S on the chest. Same as stanfords S, or Michigans M or Tennessee's T.
Use the same M that's on the helmet as our main logo.
That said I live the name: The Thundering Herd !

I don't understand you calling it a slang term. I went to the online slang dictionary and Herd is not listed.

Alabama fans say Bama or Roll Tide instead of "Crimson Tide". Kentucky fans will say, "Go Cats". Miami is often just called the "U". Just how it goes. Do all of your fraternity brothers say fraternity, or do some say "frat"?

When I worked for OSU, the Columbus Dispatch was always referring to Penn State as the Nits. Never could tell if they were clueless or just trolling them.

So if we do not "bring on The Herd" what would some suggest be said? Bring on the stampede , bring on the bisons , bring on the woolly four legged mammal. "Bring on The Herd" is about as good as its gonna get as well as has been a "tradition" for a long long time ( thats novel , tradition). I guess we could go with Lets bring on the Marshall University Thundering Herd (could play an entire basketball game in the time it will take to say that) ..nah..BRING ON THE HERD....tradition.

Something I would go for is the elimination of the odd ball print regarding Thundering Herd in the end zone , go with blank green backdrop , put Marshall in both end zones and leave it at that. Too many fonts going on. Same for hoops , go with Marshall along both baselines. JMHO on the matter.

I thought you meant Collin Cowherd. Don't know how a sure titled "The Thundering Herd" isn't some kind of trademark infringement.

Different fields of use with little overlap and very low likelihood of confusion (the "test" used for determining whether there is / is not trademark infringement).

Except we are not near as recognizable as those schools. If I were a non-sports fan or even a casual fan from out west and saw a "M" with no text, what are the chances it would be recognized? At least the "M" with "The Herd" through it can produce an accurate result on Google.

Bring On The HERD ...Not The Cocks...Not The Noles...Not The Pack...Not The Huskers...and NEVER The Ears

BRING ON THE HERD!!!

Just be thankful our mascot is not a goose. Then we would be "The Gaggle."

Bring on The Clowder (Cats)
Bring on the Sounder (Pigs). Think Razorbacks
Bring on the Ambush (Tigers)
Bring on the convocation (Eagles)
Bring on the parliament (Owls)
Bring on the Bale (Turtles) Think Maryland
Bring on the Knot (Toads) Think TCU. Also Bring on the Army (Frogs) TCU
Bring on the Muster (Penguins). Youngstown St.
Bring on the Kittle (Hawks)
Bring on the Paddling (Ducks)

FSU fans don't care when 'Noles is used.

The Herd is our image, and I like it

"Noles" isn't on their 50 yard line at Doak Cambell. Noles isn't center court in the Tucker Center. Noles isn't the media logo for every sporting event. Noles isn't the logo that has become the primary logo used on merchandise & athletic equipment.

Like I said I use The Herd too but it shouldn't be the face of the university because ONE person likes it and made the decision.

Again it's not saying it. I say it all the time. It's the use of it for eyes to see and how that is the only thing used.

Oh yea and it's Fraternity not Frat.

Herd, Noles, Eers, Nits, Heels and Horns are byproducts of Headline writers wanting to maximize space w/o writing the full team nickname. I think you're right, Marshall apears to be the only school that has incorporated a "nickname" in the logo.

It seems Marshall marketing is always experimenting while trying to find a brand that sticks.

LOL. Way wrong. We are one of only a few G5 schools that HAS a national brand, and good name recognition. The movie, the winning tradition it would work and be a seamless endeavor. Michigan got rid of their stripe years ago, so should we.

We all agree that we are an "M" school... Beyond that, the gloves are off !!!

There are dozens of "M" schools. I am certain more than any other letter. We need the bar with either "The Herd" or "Marshall".

I guess we have proven we can argue about anything.

Are there a dozen schools with a Kelly green "M" with white outline?

Actually I think I'm just going to change it to bang.

Actually that WOULD work. I remember seeing Bang carrying on a conversation with The Pope and a young lady walked up to me and asked, "Who is that guy in the big, white robe talking to Bang?"

If you think Marshall is at such a level that a green M says "Marshall University, Huntington, West Virginia" more than 50 miles from here, you have an opinion of Marshall University's role in the great scheme of the world that is simply ridiculous. We are not Auburn or Clemson. We aren't even Purdue.

Lol ok.

Like I said I use The Herd too but it shouldn't be the face of the university because ONE person likes it and made the decision.

It isn't one person though. A lot of people like it, as you can tell by the thread. It fits a lot better than "Thundering Herd" does on most products. It's cleaner, simpler. It looks nice.

In this one fairly small thread, the majority like The Herd. It is not one person, and the OP is in the vast minority. During the greatest success of either if our major programs (MBB top 8 in '71-'72), our home jerseys simply said "The Herd"! Missouri's name is certainly not MIZZOU, but they have multiple trademarked logos with that name. Even though our official nickname is "Thundering Herd, if The Herd is widely used and approved by the school, it makes sense to create a mark(s) and to trademark it. Also keep in mind that in practice, Thundering Herd is pretty long, to use that across the M means either a much wider unit, or smaller type... not as clean & efficient. Relax, and Bring on The Herd!

The Marshall M is very recognizable outside that 50 mile radius
