Dublin, Oh
The only time we are good is when we have an awesome QB. If we have to rely on anything else we will be either mediocre if bad. For those that thought Cato was a system QB look no further than tonight. Ohio is awful, birdsong made them look like Ohio State. With Cato we win by 30.

In our history How we are at QB is how we will be. If we can't find anybody better at QB we will be no better than 7-5 or 6-6. Even in our IAA days Peterson, Gregory, Payton Kresser, and we were great. Then Pennington and Byron in IA.

Look at the Snyder era horrible quarterbacks horrible records.

A team is only as good as their QB. Our QB sucks.

When is the last time a top25 team took in a transfer from a below average at best FCS team with a terrible TD/INT ratio?

He couldn't even keep his starting job at JMU and now he's starting for Marshall. That makes zero sense.

Ask Oregon...they have an FCS transfer. Except he's pretty good. Everyone was wondering about Cato's skills and abilities because of his size and temper on the sidelines. He turned out pretty good for us.
I feel, and hope, the Birdsong and the team, see this as a major error and not lose anymore this season.
Marshall didn't lose to ohio, Marshall lost to Marshall. Any sort of coherent series' showed me that...but we constantly gave ohio as many breaks as they could get. They won't say they were lucky though, thats the nature of a rivalry. But we all know the better team lost and was beaten by themselves.

I'm not saying the better team lost last night.. The team with more talent may have lost but the better TEAM won last night.. We say this every single year, "Oh we beat ourselves".. They've won 4 out of the last 5 against us including one at our place with a team that won 10 games.. When are we going to give Ohio some credit for our poor play every single year against them? It isn't a jinx or a curse.. Solich has Doc's number and he always has a game plan that makes us look down right pathetic.. The turnovers, the penalties the inability to move the football.. Sure, that is on us to an extent, but there is another team on the other side of the field causing quite a bit of those issues as well.

Devonte Allen destroyed Bass last year.. Bass came out last night and got in Allen's head from the first snap as a result he got 0 receptions and about 5 penalties

My point of this thread is we have always had to have an above average QB to be really good. We haven't ever had a great season or special season with a mediocre quarterback. If we keep Birdsong in all year we will go 7-5 to 6-6.

For those who are on Legg he has to simplify the playbook for our starting QB. Birdsong does a lot of things that are scary. He has literally zero pocket presence. He doesn't feel pressure at all. He doesn't step up in the pocket. He completely locks on to we. On one 3rd down play he locked onto 1 receiver and threw into double coverage and we had a wr ruining completely free on the outside and he never looked at him. He also had several times there was green in front of him to pick up first downs with his feet and he stated put making terrible throws and we punt.

He did many of these things last week but the great last drive, the fact we beat a Big 10 opponent etc nobody paid attention. I'm not going to sugar coat it we should have beat Ohio by at least 3 scores. This is a 500 MAC school. We were unprepared, undisciplined and had a QB who displayed one of the worst games I've seen a Marshall quarterback have in the modern era.

We play 2 horrendous teams coming up. I sincerely hope we play Litton. Let him cut his teeth this year and we will know what we will have the next 3 years. In my opinion we will win nothing with Birdsong other than beating bad teams and finishing 500. Somebody on a thread made the statement that Cato had some bad games early in his career but you always saw the talent even during bad games, I don't see anything with him that makes me think he's going to be awesome once he gains more experience.

I was hoping we could keep Litton on the bench but it might come to getting him some playing time this year.

If we are going to burn his redshirt right now is the perfect chance to do it.. You have a FCS school coming into our place.. That's a good game to ease him into and let him get his feet wet in and then you have Kent State and ODU two more favorable match ups before getting into Southern Miss who seems to be much improved.

That's a good stretch of games that could allow Litton to come in and get comfortable without having to be asked to do too much.. But, I don't see us changing QBs.

Bwahaha one game and you're going to burn a redshirt.
You might as well join City Tan and change your last name to Snyder...after all, he burned a redshirt that could have ultimately helped us an entire year more.

Marshall did beat themselves. ohio has nothing to do with penalties and their crowd wasnt nearly loud or intimidating enough to cause all of them. Thats entirely on Marshall and it helped them tremendously.

Finally, those who think it was dumb to not bench Birdsong, obviously don't realize, Marshall wasn't exactly in a hole by scoring means. We trailed by 7 most of the game and hardly more. Possibly 10 pts with a still good chance to win...something you WANT the starter to experience. In no way was Marshall entirely out of the game...they played terribly but ohio could barely produce themselves...allowing Birdsong to have chances to win. Yes, he had bad starts being 20 yds behind, but in no way was he ever really impossibly behind. It was on Birdsong to win the game and recover. He didn't. It happens. Get over it.

Herdstruck why are you always such a jerk when you post? All of your posts are attacking and condescending. You are one of the people who have absolutely ruined a great board that I have posted on for years. Congratulations.

I stated my opinion that's it. People don't have to agree with me, that's why we have a message board to hear a lot of varying opinions.

My opinion is Birdsong is mediocre to bad. What I have seen on the field gives me zero confidence.
In my opinion If we stay with him at QB we will have a very mediocre year. I think with this team and this schedule if we go 6-6 or 7-5 or even 8-4 it's a huge disappointment.

Doc has said Chase is definitely the future. Why not play Him this year while he has a stud running back and a good offensive line. Why sacrifice next year to keep a quarterback who may lead us to 8 wins tops. I would rather have 2016 roll around and have an experienced Litton running the show for the next 3 years rather than coming off a 7-5 season and not really knowing who will be the QB.

Once again this is just my opinion. Now feel free to tell me how stupid I am and dumb and I'm not a good fan and whatever other insults you can come up with.

Amen. Truth hurts.

At EWU, Vernon Adams put up video game numbers consistently, while leading a very good FCS school. Birdsong consistently threw passes to guys wearing different color jerseys while he was at JMU.

Not until weeks 4-6 do you really know what sort of team you have...

Alright...
So a QB who couldn't be more opposite the former star is taking over. Adjusting to a system built for someone more mobile. Goes out and leads a game winning drive to defeat a Big 10 school.
Same QB finds himself in a situation where he is behind...except he is struggling this time.
Instead of babying the guy, you leave him in. Make him win the game. Instead, he doesn't.
Now, you can speculate all you want about that...but you need to let the guy lose in such a fashion.
It is a reminder for him to take the team and himself more seriously. I'd rather take a QB who has been terrible and experienced the true definition of losing, over a QB completely babied into a system.
A point forgotten that I made earlier, its not like Marshall was really down in points like 44-7...we trailed by 7 most of the game. All it took was for one drive to click...
Didn't happen and thats ok...
Because IF Birdsong's character is half of Cato's, Birdsong will do whatever he can to avoid such a loss and performance, ever, again.
its good to hit rock bottom and experience it, so you know to never go there again.

But you are upset because I called you out on your amazing decision to bench Birdsong for a redshirted QB, who could benefit from seeing how his incumbent will respond, instead, tossed out and forced to develop on his own...and, by your logic, benched if he has a terrible game.
So, basically, you won't allow a QB to have a bad game, learn, and recover in a solid tune up game...but rather, burn an entire season off of an even younger QB, in the hopes he can compete in a league with a bullseye on his teams back?
...and you whine about me being condescending?? Well, I won't lie, I was being such towards you, because your logic would bury the program further into the ground than Snyder and kayo combined...not only would your idea confuse several fans of not only wasting a redshirt, but being so trigger happy to fire one QB and begin another, the team itself would lose confidence in you, and not want to play for you.
What 19 yr old would play for a coach who fires someone so quickly, not allowing them any chance to recover?
Im not trying to insult you, just giving your thoughts new perspective...which is insulting enough.

New QB and a new system of sorts...did you really think it was going to be an easy transition? If Birdsong torches the next 2 opponents, what then? Oh, they aren't as good as ohio? The offense was working but I'm such a loser that I need to convince myself I am right for once, even if it means I'll be a pessimistic jerk the rest of the season?

The worst thing is, 2 games into the season, it seems you have already made your mind up about the QB and you won't change it, for reasons listed above...and thats just sad.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Litton was red-shirted last season and thus no longer has a RS to burn.
