Interesting early season CUSA Rice v Stanford at...

It ain't Sydney, Nebraska or Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Game is being played in a 45K seat stadium used in the 2000 Olympics. Apparently there are several larger stadiums down there, but this is the one they think they can fill.

You are looking at two RICH alumni bases, so maybe thay can make some $$ off of it.

Many times, the location of these games aren't based on the participants choosing the venue based on what they think they can or can't fill up. If a promoter isn't involved (which there probably is), the cost and availability is much more of a factor. The greater Sydney area has numerous venues that are suitable, both bigger and smaller. I can assure you that selecting which one they can fill up wasn't the deciding factor. If they could only sell 30,000 seats in an 80,000 seat venue, yet the 80,000 seat venue was far cheaper and available, they would be playing there instead of the 45,000 seat venue.

Australia has made a recent push to get American football there over the last couple of years. A private backer (guy who runs a large hedge fund) has invested millions recently in promoting American football in Australia and trying to profit from it.
