IRS Agents

If you are honest on your taxes, you have nothing to worry about.

If those people hadn't broke the law and resisted, the cops wouldn't have beat/tazed/shot them.

I do have a question though....is this 87k number all IRS agents? Or is it all personnel? Because if 87k personnel means you can actually get someone at the IRS on the phone, and your return will be processed sooner than several months, that's cool. Who is saying it is 87k agents? Is it the usual suspects?

Hell. I'm thinking about applying when the jobs are posted. Might as well suck off the govt teet the way boomer groomers are doing. Sharpen pencils, push papers, can never be fired, govt pension. Sounds like the govt is building another govt funded boondoggle.

They’re not hiring 80,000 new agents. They’re budgeting to hire that many total people over the next 10 years. The total increase will be around 20-30,000 (who mostly won’t even be agents), which will just bring them back in line to how many employees they had about 10 years ago.

Making up for years of Republican underfunding of the IRS to please their corporate overlords.

That's not entirely true. If you are audited, you bear the cost of the examination, both in time and money. Even if you are are small business that is honest, those costs are on you.

Are you intentionally being disingenuous?

A valid question that has several layers of answers.

Technology has reduced the need for many traditional on-site audits that are generally more time consuming and expensive to both the taxpayer and the Service. There are tools in place that can catch underreported income in reconciling 1099s reported to income reported.

The problem is the IRS, like many government agencies, isn't necessarily worried about tangible results but rather in number of cases closed. A certain number of audits are needed to be performed each year. The Service and its agents don't want to get mired down in difficult engagements so easier ones (on face value) are usually selected. There are certainly exceptions to this because of "red flags" and other issues.

Returns be processed sooner than several months? Other than amended returns what are you talking about? The vast majority of returns are e-filed and are processed within a matter of days. That's a strawman argument for bigger government if I've ever heard one...

Good luck for the IRS trying to hire additional individuals. It will simply being competing with the private sector for candidates in a tight job market. And there is an unspoken reason why the IRS is inefficient. The IRS has been unable to retain younger talent creating a dearth of mid-level positions because of unfair promotion practices and of the following, which has been a problem for as long as I can remember and hasn't improved since the following article was written.

There is much more wrong with the IRS that additional people won't solve.

Technology hasn't reduced the need for staffing levels as in other industries and businesses???

My accountant, better known as @WV-FAN already applied for a supervisory position, like a regional VP, but he was turned down due to his drinking problem and using me as a reference.

Govt bureaucracy is the only group of people that have a vested interest in improved reduced productivity.

My guess is these new hires will ultimately mirror the hires of the TSA.

It's is a sad state when we can't have an intelligent and non-partisan discussion about the monies earmarked for the IRS.

Is there a rush to hire 87k auditors? Debatable. Is that going to happen overnight? No. Is that going to ever happen? Again debatable based on the IRS's past ability to find, hire and retain qualified employees.

Let's take a realistic look at this. $80 billion over the next decade equals $8 billion per year. Liberals are saying the net IRS employee increase per year will be 3k. 3k new employees x $70k is $210 million per year. What is the remaining $7.8 billion per year being spent on? The numbers don't add up and anyone that thinks otherwise is only fooling themselves.

Hey now!!! This is the govt! For every $1 promised for a constituency, expect .35 actually spent on the promoted purpose.

Some, and probably most if they are honest in philosophy, are OK with some taxes, yes.

There are many schools of thoughts in libertarianism; while there are certain agreed upon principles, not all are anarcho-capitalists....hell, the most prominent libertarians to hold American political office don't go that far, but that is about as pure as American libertarianism gets. Frankly, most Americans who say they are libertarian just want to smoke dope and not pay taxes; as with all Americans, the vast majority are ignorant of political philosophy beyond simple "my side good, other side bad" simplistic ignorance.

Some government is a necessary consequence of the non-aggression principle.* And how do we pay for that? Taxes.

* Recall that many times I have stated, "if you go about fvcking over others, there will be rules." It is fun to dabble in utopian philosophy, but that's not how the world works, because some, or many, humans are really fvcking shitty.

Perhaps it would help if we located the big IRS offices in places that were not expensive as hell to live in.

The establishment is skeered Trump is going to run again with his 75 million votes. That makes him a front runner. They are skeered to death.

I've told you more than once....trump will never be president again.
I said he is the front runner. If he got 75 million votes last time he is going to pull that again or close. That would mean he would outpace every election ever except where mush pulled in the mystery 82 million or whatever. Mush can't get 82 million again or whatever unless they even cheat bigger. Going to be harder to ballot stuff again.

Ask Ron Johnson, he's on your team:

Interesting that you would reference a Republican as a source of information...

The biggest recent problem with the IRS is its employees have been milking the Covid 19 protocols. I have heard that from a few dedicated Service employees that have remained working.

"In the last two years, Treasury said 20% of its customer service employees at IRS have been unavailable due to COVID-19 related reasons."

"The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) isn't shutting down completely - but it's getting close. Some IRS call centers and return processing centers are closing in response to COVID-19."

"In response, Reardon says, "We continue to call for the closure of all federal buildings where 50 or more federal employees work, including IRS facilities.""

And as I previously said about processing delays mainly due to amended returns (which are often paper filed).

"The Treasury officials implored taxpayers to file electronically to avoid backlogs and ensure their returns are accurate, including correct information on payments authorized as part of COVID-19 relief legislation."

Perhaps it would help if we located the big IRS offices in places that were not expensive as hell to live in

Hmmm... There are likely plenty of perspective IRS employees in the areas you suggest...

The IRS has been systematically closing local field offices that could be an important component and asset in providing better customer service.

exactly. the IRS is in shambles, it is the most incompetent organization i've ever dealt with. they're STILL working from home. it's next to impossible to speak to an agent unless you have the inside track AND get extremely lucky. the IRS doesn't need 87K new positions, the administration needs to make the current employees to do their damn job or fire their ass. they're still 11 million tax returns behind, which is atrocious given the e-filing platform which does seem to work well. muh friend has clients with fairly simple tax returns that still haven't received their refund from 2021. there's simply no excuse for it . . . just another liberally run trash organization.

I can't say I blame them, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity, and a damn shame I could not do the same.

I did not suggest any particular areas. That said, I can think of several large metro areas with a decent cost of living and a high number of educated citizens produced by large universities within or nearby.

It may be cost effective to hire more people, sure.

Or we could greatly simplify the tax code...which won't happen, because the tax code is complex because it is designed to benefit the rich and corporations, and that is who controls the government.
