The University of Kentucky has officially turned its athletic department into a nonprofit LLC named Champions Blue—a first-of-its-kind move approved by the school’s Board of Trustees, per public filing with the Kentucky Secretary of State, dated April 17, 2025.
From now on, UK Athletics will operate as a public-private partnership, separate from the university, with its own governing board.
Why? With athlete revenue sharing on the horizon, Kentucky expects costs to rise by $50M+ per year. This new model gives them flexibility to raise money, sign business deals, and shield the academic side from financial stress.
