Today, my brother-in-law called and asked if I wanted to take my kids fishing today after work. I had been promising my 7 year old son that I would take him so I thought this evening sounded perfect.

My daughter, who is 3 1/2, had never been fishing. Well...5 minutes after arriving she caught her first fish ever. My son then proceeded to catch three. Me? Zero! Regardless, nothing can replace the joy of my little girl sitting on my lap while reeling in her first ever fish. She was the happiest girl on earth in that moment.

That’s life, friends. Screw politics. Go fishing.

Fishing sucks, but good story.

While driving tonight, I passed a family of two parents and three young children walking. Mom and dad each had a big dog on a leash. The three children were having a blast following behind and messing with the dogs. Something as simple as walking the dogs around the block gave the kids joy. It made me wonder if it was something they did every night as a family which would be pretty cool but would probably be tough to accommodate with schedules.

I have a lot of great stories about my daughter when she was little, and some of them are fishing stories. But the best fishing story is a pond and one damn fish. She saw it. It came up to the surface on her first cast and didn't bite. Old school fishing, a piece of hotdog as bait. She worked that fish in on about ten cast casts, kept playing with it. It would nibble but not bite. Finally it was getting dusk, and the mosquitoes were biting like hell. I said we had to go. She said nope, one more cast. She got it. She was about 7 then. She pulled the hook out herself, this wasn't her first rodeo, but her skills were getting good, and she released it. A great memory.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of fishing. My dad didn’t fish or hunt so I never really did either as a child. My father-in-law likes to and always wanted to take my son fishing when he was a baby so, naturally, I went.

My son and I actually caught our first fish ever on the same day. That was a pretty cool experience. I don’t go because I like to fish. I go because they do.
