I hated the BGSU game when it was scheduled, I hated it before the season started, I hated it last night, and I hate it now. No idea why we schedule that game given the history. If we host Troy yesterday then we have gameday in front of a sold out crowd. That part is bad luck. Choosing to schedule a historical bugaboo program is on us.

This one hurts because we all saw it coming and then the coaches and players said all the right things to allay those fears and we bought it. The situation said trap game in a bad venue for us. The situation said we had players basking in a week of adulation and looking ahead to all the laurels they were going to collect in January after they obviously blew through the rest of the schedule on their way to glory. Sure, sure there would be a tough game or two, but we will be ready. Bowling Green? No chance. The situation said our head coach was on a 5 day press tour bashfully rejecting comparisons to Nick Saban while then talking just like him. And we all bought it. All of us. This time it’s different. Even when the position coach of the most vital group on the team quit two days before the game we bought it. Huff’s got this. He is the new Saban and we get to have him for a couple years. Let’s roll.

What we got is the reality that everything the situation appeared to be was 100% true and all the words sound good but meant nothing. There is a reason no one else is Nick Saban while everyone tries to talk like him. We feasted all week on a steady diet of rat poison and nothing anyone said made a difference. The one thing Huff is 100% correct about is the transfer portal has changed CFB. Now more than ever, most any team can beat most any other team on any given day. The talent below the super super elite has spread out. We were never good enough to just roll the ball out there and beat a team, even in our best years (remember Wofford at home?). This team is good enough to win them all. I believe that. But there is not a single team on our schedule without the ability to beat us when we are not focused on the task at hand. That includes Gardner-Webb. The Troy game will tell the tale of where this team is at and where it is going to be.
