Louisville Pounding UNC-Charlotte

Don't mean to derail this thread but DAMN, Rice looks like they are back to the old rice of winning 1 or 2 games a year. They are terrible. Making WKU qb look like he's better than Doughty. Feel sorry for Rice for them to fall that far, need them to do well for the conference.

One thing, though, beefcake, the guy at WKU, Brohm, is cut from the same cloth as the sleazebag at U of Smell, Petrino!!! Brohm played for the cards, remember. Both guys are offensive minded, for sure, but they would BOTH run up the score on their mothers, even if they were in their 90s and confined to wheel chairs. The term "sportsmanship" is NOT in either Coach's vocabulary, IMO!!!

Louisville could be a Top 10 coming into Huntington.

I don't expect us to win this game, I bet they hang 47 on us, and we hang 35 on them. Still, I'm hopeful for a good game and not a blow out.

Still it's AWESOME to think a REAL Top 10 team that has scrotal contents doesn't wear a skirt and isn't afraid to come and play Marshall at Marshall is coming to Htown! Great job scheduling Hamrick!

Oh I agree, WKU first trip to Huntington told us how Brohm is. I am in disbelief how far Rice has fallen, they look like the North Texas of last year, not even competitive. I don't buy that WKU didn't drop off without Doughty either, but I guess another game or two will tell the story on whether I am wrong or not.

That's pretty much what I expect, don't think all the pieces are in place to take them down, but I fully expect us to beat Pitt or make them sweat to the very end.

Doughty graduated, but a lot of WKU's skill players didn't, that's what made them look so good. They actually are that good.
That's true, ala with Litton last year having a semi decent supporting cast. We will see though when they actually face a team with a defense. Rice, kinda feel sorry for them, they look too much like the 1 and 2 win rice team of the past, slowly but surely regressed each year under the HC.

a lot of people on here attribute two straight loses solely to Doughty. i've tried to warn you guys. WKU is legit and will be for the near future. they beat one of our top 5 teams EVER in HUNTINGTON. you don't win a game like that with just a single "good/great" player...

I agree!!! My only question is if Jackson can get through the season without a huge injury. Too many times we have seen QBs who like to run - like he does - get major knee injuries.

True enough Andy, sure hope Heater has learned a thing or two last few years, if not, we may lose to them again. Love Heater to death, but Brohm has his number so far.

You learned a whole lot more about how bad UNCC is than how good Loserville is from this game. Heck we beat them 34-10 last year in a game that was never really in doubt. In the entire history of the program, they have beaten Georgia State, Presbyterian, Campbell, Johnson C. Smith, NC Central, Wesley, Morehead State, Chowan, and Gardner-Webb. The only I-A on that list is equally kidding itself Georgia State.

UNCC was a mistake. IF there is another major realignment coming, wherever MU ends up, several kidding themselves school in CUSA need to be pushed back down where they belong.

UNCC's lack of football aside, scoring 56 points and pitching a shutout in the first half of the first game of the season is impressive. i could put a laundry list of Marshall vs 1AA/FCS games (1st of the season) in which we battled it out through 3 and 4 quarters. true Petrino runs the score up, but just about all coaches let their guys play the entire first half like it's 0-0. we beat pretty much this same UNCC team last year 34-10. we played our 1's and ran our offense into the 4th quarter. we are improved... i don't know that we are 56-0 at halftime improved........

i have a lot less confidence about the Louisville game after last night than i did before............

I had put that one down a one of 3 losses. Certainly nothing from last night did anything to change that.

since i've now officially got the football bug (and love me some statistics)...

since 2002 (as far back as ESPN box scores go) halftime scores
2002 Appy State 23-10
2003 Hofstra 28-14
2004 Troy 6-7
2005 Will & Mary 23-10
2006 Hofstra 20-17
2007 New Hamp 0-24 (2nd home game; 3rd overall)
2008 Ill State 14-7
2009 S. Ill 7-14
2010 pass (Doc's 1st year, no cupcakes...)
2011 pass (no cupcakes)
2012 W. Carolina 24-3
2013 Garner Webb 34-0
2014 Rhode Island 17-0
2015 Norfolk St 24-7
2016 Morgan St TBD

granted, there are a lot of Snyder crap games in there, but there are also a few really good teams that were no where close to 56-0 at halftime impressive... both bold teams finished the season ranked in the top 25. certainly not apples to apples comparison or a definitive indicator of how the season will go. just some food for discussion...

and yes, i compared UNCC to 1AA/FCS (mostly) because they are garbage...

edit: we didn't score 56 (or more) points total in any of those games...

I would go as far as to say that half of those teams on that list would clobber UNCC to date. Troy was 1A at that time if I recall correctly, beat us, then went to Missouri and beat them.

you are probably 100% correct. i'm not trying to make more out of it than it was (UNCC is dog shit), but scoring 56 in a half is still pretty damn impressive. i would have expected a score like that from this game if it were played a month from now... not out the gate.

Marshall was not going to run up the score on UNCC. Too many Marshall Conections and Doc is chums with their coach. Doc also does not run up scores intentionally.

agreed...

BUT

we discussed this at length last year with possession breakdowns and who was in the game and when. we were not going to "try" and run the score up, but we also did not get the chance. we played a terrible second half of football. UNCC pitched a shutout against our 1's in the 3rd. our starters were still in the game (and throwing the ball) in the 4th quarter. Birdsong came in the 2nd drive of the 4th (12 to go). Chase threw the ball 48 times. Birdsong threw it 5 (all in the 4th).

I still say a HUGE factor in the Louisville game will be the fact that Louisville plays Florida State the week before us, and Clemson the week after. They will be primed for an upset, either looking back or ahead.

Oh we definitely had moments last year, in both directions(good and bad). You could tell we had a young QB, albeit a talented one. Offensive genius in one series or one game and then the next below average. The UNCC game was definitely one of the below average moments. Not complaining, he did better his first year than Cato did. Just saying you could see the lack of experience at certain positions on the team and it affected production in some of the games. Wasn't Norfolk St. his first real game?

I wouldn't rate a team too much after their first game. Louisville looked great but they weren't exactly playing a team that had a pulse. I think their QB looked great but early on UCF could get pressure on him...just couldn't get him down. They just didn't have the athletes.

If I was UofL I would worried the QB won't make it through the year. He isn't exactly that big and he will take some hits. I am anxious for the FSU-UofL game... I wish I could watch it but I believe that game is at the same time as ours that day.

Cardinal fan here. I have my ticket for the UofL-MU game and I will see all you in a few weeks.

I agree on both points above. The things to work on: The OL is still a problem. There were several instances in the first quarter where UNCC had pass rushers breaking into the offensive backfield as soon as the ball was hiked. Lamar’s athleticism masked a lot of that in the 1st quarter score. Also, the secondary left WR’s wide open with missed assignments, which again was masked by a bad opponent with over/under-thrown balls or receivers not on their routes. Yes I agree this may seem petty given the score, but they need to clean these up b/c better opponents will exploit this..

UNCC was really, really bad. I was surprised at all the trash talk that I could see on TV so who knows how much they were actually doing that we couldn't see. Their QB was a headcase. I was glad when Lamar didn't start the 2nd half b/c I feared something twisting his ankle in a pile or something.

As far as running the score up: Petrino was asked about the TD at the end of the 2nd quarter (got the ball back, ran the 2 minute offense, called timeout with 9 seconds left to punch it in to go up 56-0). Petrino responded it was a rare chance in a live game to practice the 2 minute offense. He has a point but I can see why someone would have problem with it. He did pull the starters for the full second half and they played 2nd and 3rd string for all of it. Apparently they had walk-ons not even dressed who put pads on for the 2nd half. This may be their only chance to get on the field, can't ask them to not try.

Last night went about as well as you can hope for in an opening game against #128 of 128 in FBS: Won big, no injuries, 2nd & 3rd string playing the entire second half, and a few things to work on. We'll learn more @Syracuse, where Louisville has historically always had problems (even when SU was bad).

Jurich remembers where Louisville came from. He insists on home & home OOC scheduling for this reason (unless the other team insists on a buyout). Louisville is doing the Houston return game this season, and this was scheduled before Houston was what they are today. Anyway, I'd love to see this series continue, a good rivalry and drivable for both fanbases.

"Running up the score" is something shitty teams claim when somebody beats their pants off, like it wasn't fair that the other team was way better than them.

Charlotte once got taken to the woodshed 40-13 by UNC-Central, a Division II school. At home.

I can't imagine any scenario where I would fault a coach for the score at halftime. I have no problem running your offense and defense with 2nd and 3rd stringers up big either. What happens mid season when you lose a bunch of guys to injury and the replacements have only ever ran dives and counters in game situations? If the other team truly has a problem with the score, they should run the clock out and take a knee when they have th ball...

Louisville QB Jackson is now a sophomore and is improved over last season, based on the first game.

Before we going making scoring comparisons, which are highly suspect, especially from different years, remember this one thing. We played UNCC THERE last year and our QB was a TRUE FRESHMAN!!. This year Louisville routed the 49ers AT HOME, with, like I said, their star QB now a soph.

We'll see if Chase has improved over his 1st year after this first game, which won't be a totally valid indicator based on the competition. Just hope his game has improved significantly as we have no few than FIVE very tough games looming on this year's schedule!!
