Depends on the movie. 2013's Gravity made fantastic use of 3D. I was skeptical of how it would play in Mad Max until I saw it last night.

I think if a filmmaker shoots with it in mind, they can do some great stuff. If it's a situation where they come back in at post & just kind of pick scenes to make 3d, I think that's where it's gimmicky.
