Marshall playing Concord

I don't think they have more talent, I just think its contained better than ours. I still think we run a condensed street ball fast pace with no defense. The good part of that is we can beat anyone, the bad is we can (and do) lose to anyone.
Nothing we do is street ball.

You are CORRECT Herdmeister.

Not sure why the mentioned (3) schools did not wish to play The Herd. I am aware the (3) schools were playing in recent national tournaments. Perhaps, they felt it was too demanding to play us Sunday? Clemson travels to Ohio State for the ACC-Big 10 Challenge, Wednesday, Nov. 29...most likely, the Tigers wanted fresh legs to battle the Buckeyes. Ohio State & Indiana were involved in Holiday tournaments and probably needed a few days rest?

Danny is not stupid
. He is well aware he needs to play tough competition to get ready for CUSA play. Until Dan continues to build Marshall's program...we are not that attractive to "some" schools. This years team is young and most of the players are getting minutes for the first time at the college level. Elmore said it best after the Concord victory..."we are young and the new guys are gaining valuable experience no matter the opponent...they are learning our system and becoming better defensive players."

It's a process...and Dan is looking at games in February & early March. What you do in November is not as important as it is getting ready for the CUSA contests.

You hit the nail on the head. A school does not want to pay $90k to an unknown mid major to come in if there is any chance of losing. They will pay that to a name mid major because they can say, 'hey, they won a game or two in the dance last year'. Danny has explained that to us many times over the past 2-3 years. Like he said, we start winning regularly and then we can get those games.

I NEVER said that Dan did not want to play Concord...HerdMeister did. Dan (in my opinion) played Concord because Lewis (his Dad) was a star in football, basketball and baseball for the Mountain Lions. Had not Lewis passed recently he would have been thrilled to see his school play the HERD. Plus, I am pleased to see some WV small colleges/universities receive a good pay check from Marshall. (Point 2) I do not speak for any of the 3 guys mentioned. You need to ask them. They may be cup cakes in your mind...but not cupcakes for our freshman dominated "learning" players.

A strength of schedule of 326 and an RPI of 232 doesnt make the tournament committees look favorably on a nice "gesture"......Since he took the job, his scheduler has been horrible. Go to realtimerpi.com-they dont even list the Concord game because its a non-D1 team. That should never happen for a team that aspires to make it to the post season without a conference tourney win.

By the way- did anyone else notice WVU is playing Wheeling Jesuit? Is it really that big of a deal that we play Concord?

I agree with that but the point should be our overall schedule and not the problem with playing one particular game.

I agree but Marshall has neither right now. Their SOS is 326 and their RPI is 232. This game helps neither one go up.....

With our "fickle" fan base demanding immediate positive results====NOW...I support Dan has been smart "to ween" the faithful to buy into THE NEW HERD basketball program. It's working...just look at the increase of folks coming to the Cam. He has recruited great kids with wonderful parents trusting him with their son's future, players gaining an education, having fun with the college experience, meeting new friends, and playing basketball on the college level. Would you rather him bring in guys with questionable baggage? Past coaches tried that method...and we got poor results out of their plans.

HIS GOAL remains the same as when he accepted the job....WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS! It will not happen in 3 years! Name me another basketball program that became a National power after three years of a coaching change....when the program has been in the dumpster for years!

I support if Butler, Gonzaga, Wichita State can become household basketball names & programs....WHY NOT MARSHALL? Help is on the way. The HERD will have a seasoned team by the end of the February. Adding Rondale Watson (G) to the mix (January) will spell Burks, West & Elmore some time to rest their legs. Jannson Williams & Darius George will continue to grow to become capable contributors. Ajdin Penava is vastly improved and really stepping up his game.... ...and Baby Shack will be in the lineup next season....I predict a banner year for The HERD in 2018-19. Folks, our lineup is filled with freshman & sophomores.....it takes time...

I think Dan loses at Bill & Mary Wednesday night. The Tribe has bigger, stronger players (6-11, 6-9. 6-8, etc) and their back court guys shoots the 3-ball well. Akron will be difficult too on Saturday. The schedule is stepping up and we will get a better feel starting now! Xavier & Toledo will be difficult for anyone coming to their place. FIU gave South Carolina fits until late in the second half...finally losing by 17 points. CUSA will present some strong competition for The HERD....

Strength of Schedule & RPI.... NEVER won a basketball game! It's nice for the fans to ponder...not important to winning games.

While it's nice to dream, I will at least give you credit for being a good supportive fan :)

While it may not matter to the opponent for any given night, you can rest assured that it matters to the selection committee at the end of the season when they are picking the teams to make March Madness. You're not doing yourselves any favors in that regard by scheduling the likes of Concord College and counting it like a regular season game instead of a charity event. That probably has something to do with Marshall not making the field since Ronald Reagan was President.........

Selection committee? LOL

The only way Marshall is making the dance in the foreseeable future is to win the CUSA tourney. CUSA is a one, at best two, bid league at this point.

Playing a game or two against garbage teams is fine in basketball (30-game season with 16 CUSA games). The problem is we tend to play a lot of bad small schools followed by one or two "big" games (Illinois, Xavier) that are always on the road.

In a perfect world, we would play...

2 ridiculously easy games
2 OVC/CAA/Sun Belt/So Con teams
2 MAC teams
4 teams from other mid-major leagues Missouri Valley/A-10/Big East (Two at home)
4 major teams (at least one at home)
16 CUSA games

Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect basketball world.

Two things-1.) the Big East isn't mid major and 2.) Marshall has very little to offer a major team when it comes to having them come to the Henderson Center. No major coach wants to come to Huntington unless they have a senior captain from there. It's not a worthwhile game for 99.9% of the major coaches.
