Any of you live there? Thoughts on the area? Cost of living? Middle and High Schools? Any parts/areas significantly better than others?

I lived in Winchester back in the 90's, and go back once every couple of years, and stop in various places in the three counties that make up the Eastern Panhandle. Housing is much higher than what it used to be, due to the Washington suburbs continuing to expand into that area. If you move there, I would choose Jefferson County over Martinsburg, but it all depends on where you work. Hedgesville and Berkley Springs are both nice places to live as well. I'm not sure which of the two Jefferson school choices serves Shepherdstown, but that one would probably be best, to avoid to rift raft of Charles Town. The Inwood-Bunker Hill area has grown substantially. Musselman went from a Single A to a large Triple A school overnight, it seems. Decent area, but not a lot of retail until you drive North to Martinsburg, or South to Winchester. Lots of rednecks in that area as well, so that's a plus. All told, if you can afford Virginia, that would be your best choice. That, or Maryland.

lived in shepherdstown a couple years (go rams), but that was back in the mid/late 90's and the area has drastically changed, i.e. increased in population, since. kid plays baseball and basketball and we travel there several times a year for games. schools are damn nice; they were building at least a new one a year for several years because of the population explosion. as mich-jackass indicated, i'd stay out of martinsburg, it's drug problems rival that of huntington. there are several nice communities on the outskirts of martinsburg. area around shepherdstown is damn nice, i.e. berkeley springs is a really cool hipster town with cool shops, restaurants, etc. check out the spring mills area north of martinsburg, basically a newer up and coming community with new schools, business, etc.

thing about the entire area (martinsburg/charles town) is you have plenty of shopping, restaurants, etc. locally, and yore within an hour or less drive of other areas, i.e. harpers ferry, winchester, nova, DC, western md (deep creek lake), skiing, gambling, etc.

lived in shepherdstown.
Just reminded me when I spent an afternoon in Shepherdstown last summer, I know why I was no longer fond of it. Too many sandals wearing, i'm with her, grateful dead pansie liberals. if you ain't a hippie, you ain't spending much time there.

I currently live in Martinsburg. I would say I am closer to Hedgesville but the address is Martinsburg. As long as you stay away from downtown there are some nice places to live. Opioids are a big problem here.

Thanks! What about Sheperdstown or the Hagerstown, MD areas?
sheperdstown is high rent. Hagerstown is very nice, particularly south of town, but check out the taxes prior to making a move. Pennsylvania is the better option, in my opinion based on cost of living. All states are relatively close by in that area, but again not sure where you're planning to work. If you're old, and close to retirement, then PA is best. Chambersburg is right above hagerstown. That area rocks due to close proximity to Gettysburg.
