MATCH DAY

Vermont has momentum right now for sure gotta end it in regulation I don't think we'd win in extra time or pk

Enough about Marshall's really good soccer program. It's time for Herd fans to go back to bitching about the football team and Huff.

I really don't understand why you're such an apologist for Huff. He had opportunities to extend his contract, chose not to and continued to talk to other programs when he agreed not to.

He was barely a .500 HC until he and the team started performing like a baseball player during a contract year.

I agree Marshall fans, like virtually all sports fans, can be extremely negative and that takes a lot of the enjoyment out of the experience. However I think there is a primary reason Charles Huff is at USM and not at MU and that is Charles Huff himself.

Please quote where I'm a Huff apologist, really please, provide proof. I thought he did a very nice job of coaching this years team. The proof is in the pudding. A conference championship. Maybe he wanted to leave, maybe he was chased off by West Virginia rednecks, we'll probably never know the true reason. My point is that lately Marshall fans on the forum bitch about EVERYTHING. And you proved my point, you couldn't wait to twist it back to football and Huff.

I proved nothing. You were the one who brought football and Huff into this thread. See below...

I'm not a soccer fan but this loss stung tonight.

Had to throw in the discreet race card...

Here are some of your posts where you are playing the devil's advocate for Huff, basically being an apologist for him.

Marshall will spin it to their advantage. The truth is you have a coach who won a conference championship in his 4th year, in what is regarded as the best G5 conference, and the AD let him get away. Spears is in way over his head and needs to go.

Possibly, however he was quoted as saying Huff was the best coach he had ever played for.

He was a good enough fit for us to win a conference championship. So I'm guessing you're okay with a coach that goes 6-6, 5-7 and 4-8, but really wants to be here?

But he still pulled the team together after the Southern game to win the SBC championship. Have you ever heard the expression "lose the battle, win the war?" That's exactly what this years team did.

And this one didn't age too well did it???

The national media loves Huff, he'll land upwards if he doesn't get extended at Marshall. UCF, Temple, UNCC are landing spots that have deeper pockets.

Would really like to see us add some size and strength to the roster this off- season. A tall, classic nine that you can spam crosses into at times and some size/strength in the midfield would have really helped balance this team out. We struggled against bigger, more physical teams all year. Versatility and ball skills are great, but you also have to be able to change things up when teams are knocking you off the ball. Grassie is the best. No doubt he will reload and come back even stronger next year.

Nothing to be embarrassed about. We were playing for a Nat champ.

Both teams were similarly matched. With how the first half played out there was feeling it was going to come down to a mistake. We made the mistake and it cost us. We had some chances to finish them off in regulation and couldn’t convert.

Disappointed we didn’t win, but proud of this team.

We had that last year with AGP and I didn't love how reliant we got on playing too directly with him. I totally get what you're saying, though. Kong could fill that role but he's fairly raw and didn't really impress on balls in the air.

Where this team was "lacking' was at CAM. We just didn't have anyone with Matthew Bell's creativity - which is understandable as he was special.

Grassie will no doubt re-load. Will be interesting to see what we do through the transfer portal. I know everyone is super excited about the kid from Madrid's academy, but Grassie doesn't usually play freshman a ton unless they're top notch.

Absolutely!!! Also agree with ThunderCat's comments on some bigger guys able to handle the physical part of the game.
GO HERD!!!

Marshall has made me a soccer fan so admittedly my exposure to the sport has really only increased in the past 4-5 years.

That said, it's easy to see how we lost yesterday. Vermont ran faster. They were more physical. Their passing was much sharper.
Even with that, we should have won. If the Janjic lays on the ball in front of the net instead of kicking it right back out into traffic, the match likely looks way different. When they got even at 1-1 that seemed to make Marshall play with some sloppy desperation.

Really though...Marshall had the talent. There were a couple periods of time where they looked like they could do just about anything they wanted on offense. Unfortunately in 90 minutes of play, they only looked that way for maybe 10-15 minutes in the second half.

It's been a long time since I left a Marshall sporting event that disappointed. They were playing in my backyard and and I know it's tough to get that far. I was really hoping to see another national championship in person. It was a good season though. I hope they can regroup and come back and play a little more physical next season.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the ball passed back to him? If so, he had no choice but to play it with his feet. As some others have said, I think he was trying to boot it and simply mishit the ball. It sucks, but it happens.

Edit: just rewatched and it was definitely played back to him, meaning he had to kick it.

Yes, it was. The play was correct on his part; the execution is what failed.

Thanks for the clarification. Not a student of the game but I winced when the play was made and then boom! Vermont scored.

Even of it was a brain fart people still need to remember these are 20 year old young men and mistakes happen...

1 ? And 2 observations:
I thought on our last offensive possession, UVM committed an infraction which should have given us a “free kick” (?) just outside the 18’ box? Suddenly it didn’t & just as suddenly we lost. Can someone explain?
The fresh faced freshman midfielder was one of the most talented players on the pitch imo.
Their Frosh GK was very stout. I would think he might be next level sooner than later.
Final thought - you had to appreciate the excitement on their side + their fans. We were just there 3 1/2 years ago!

My bad...I was on the other end of the field. I did not see that it was played back to him.

Then yes...execution of getting it out of there was terrible. Either way...that was the difference.
