Game 2 vs Toledo Observations:
- Transition defense was pretty awful. Got beat down the court a few times in the first few minutes to set the tone. Consistently weren’t matching up quick enough and Toledo took advantage (11 fast breakpoints for Toledo compared to 3 for Marshall).
- Mikal Dawson shoots a ton of 3s. His shot diet was basically all 3s at Akron too. Now his volume is way up. Hes 3/18 from deep to start the year. I’m not convinced hes a good shooter at all.
- I really like the pace Dezayne Mingo plays at. Saw some good things out of him in transition too which is needed on this team. Hes probably the best passer on the team. He held up well at the POA defensively too.
- Got to give Toledo credit, they made a ton of tough shots, but I thought the staff could have made it harder on them by simply downing (icing) screens. We saw it a lot in game 1, but barely saw it yesterday. The Rockets were going middle and getting to the paint too easily (52 paint points). Forcing them to the baseline would have put the defense in better position.
- Again, foul trouble came back to bite them. The second half was a foul fest. Have to learn how to defend without fouling. 32 FTA for Toledo compared to to 17 for Marshall.
- Not the best debut for Jalen Speer.
- Both Gibbs play really tough and hard. Not the most skilled by any means, but glad they are on our side. Jakob was great down the stretch.
- Will Moore has as pure of a shooting form as you will see. He made some plays defensively as well. A long way to go, but such an exciting young player to have.
